There's a new company called Taab who is beginning to make lens tabs for lenses that came without them. For the past 3-4 years I've been using a glued tab from Heavystar on my 50mm cron. Just got one of the beta versions of the Taab focus tab to see how it would compare.

Packaging. Subtle, but nicely done. The tin could easily be repurposed for other things

The tab itself is kind of like a rubberband for lack of a better description

This gives you an idea of the size of the tab compared to the Heavystar version. The rubbery material gives it a nice grip which is easy to feel and use with your finger

Properly mounted on the camera it does add a little bit to the barrel, but you are still able to see all markings as normal. I think it would be nice to have grooves on the band to match the grooves on the lens barrel. Would also like to see the overall dimensions shaved down a hair, but I'm not sure how that would affect durability.

The band stays in place as it's needed to be stretched just a bit to get on the lens barrel. It definitely won't move once on unless you really force it. The nice part about the tab is if you're able to adjust exactly where the tab sits so if you prefer to have the tab end at infinity at 3 o'clock you can just as easily do that as having infinity at 6 o'clock

For a first run beta I think they're onto something although there will definitely need to be tweaks on the final product for it to really catch on.

What do you guys think? Do you use Heavystar's tabs or is there something you'd like to see them do with this tab? Figured I'd ask for additional feedback to provide back to them.

More info can also be found on their website:

I have no affiliation with this company other than the fact they sent me one of the tabs to test out and provide feedback on.

Cheers,
Matt

Nice idea. Thanks for the write up.

I like tabs and I think there is market for a gizmo like this one. However, I find the design a bit chunky and agree with your preference for a slimmer version.

I don't own tabless lenses, but if I did, I would prefer to implement something like you have done with the Heavystar product, even at the cost of affecting potential resale value.
