They’re using an old batch of flint glass that’s been lying around for years. This has been covered.

Good idea to make lenses from it.

Must have been the right kind of flint glass by accident. There are many sorts of flint glass, thousands, all with different refractive indexes.

Yes, it is the end of the line, Centraal Station, Amsterdam. It is a tramline, number 26, to IJburg. It is making its turn here.

Yes, there is a lot of distortion. But no flare, that is also worth something.

The 8-element is well known for “insignificant distortion” (Erwin Puts). This is due to the symmetrical design, I believe. I think it is the subject matter which is significantly curved.

I don't think this lens is for you, but you already missed the boat for the first batch anyway. If you want to get in on the second batch, you'll have to email Kevin and patiently wait for a reply 😉

But not from lead glaze on earthenware; this is forbidden in the EU for some time now.

I think lead glazes have a much higher lead content than leaded flint glass and lead crystal.

The alternative is aspherical glass, but aspherical lenses are usually much larger. I'm interested in how they will solve this problem.

I'm interested in how LLL will solve this as well. There are alternatives to using aspherical elements, such as glass in which the lead oxide is substituted with titanium oxide or zirconium oxide, but LLL will probably have to get a special batch of glass made just for them, and that will no doubt bump up the price significantly.

Yeah, I really hate my cheap and nasty Summicron 35/2 Type 1, my Summaron 35/2.8 and ALL my Leica lenses from the 50's full of cheap and nasty flint lead glass in it. I will throw it all out and bury it in an old unused mine shaft when I have the time. There's lots of them up at Cooper Peedy in the middle of nowhere in Australia...

Same goes with all the good crappy Russian lenses and all the crappy poisonous Zeiss glass from the 50's. Same goes to Voigtlander.

They are all flinty and leady and real rubbish and deserve to get shuved in a mine shaft.
