[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

Not to distract the audience here, but the Summaron is a gem. Buy it if you can.

Yes, I agree.
My intention was to demonstrate the coincidence of noticing this thread, not to necessarily diminish the Summaron.

I will most likely eventually purchase a Summaron -- I can never have too many 35's!

Take it as you will, but I’m really not a fan of the pink-purple mounting button. It looks like someone misplaced the sequins from a prom dress...

Personally I’d much prefer plain red. Simple, classy and timeless. A lens like this doesn’t need ‘bling’.

I cannot agree with nickthetasmaniac more.
That pink-purple dot just looks so 俗气 😛

If you'd prefer a plain red dot, DAG sells them for $5.

I lost a red dot from a Leica lens (no idea how) and here is what I did in the days before internet selling became widely available.

I recalled seeing dress maker's pins with various colored round heads on the blunt end. Including the color red, which happened to be an exact match for the missing dot from my lens. So I went to a fabric / needlework / craft store and bought a box of the pins for a couple of bucks. Then using a Dremel tool with a high speed circular friction saw mounted I cut the dot through its middle (the metal pin conveniently was held in a small vice or lock jaw pliers - I cannot quite recall exactly). I think the cut on the dot then needed a little smoothing on a coarse sharpening stone which took maybe a minute. Then I glued it onto the lens in place of the missing one using epoxy. It was still there 10 years later when I sold the lens.

Someone in China should make all the Leica lenses we love..
F1.0 Noct...75mm F1.4...35mm F1.4 pre..
Sell em for a fair price..make them as good or better..
There will be buyers..

Someone in China can most probably do your job for 1/10th of the price too, but with that approach there won't be any buyers (outstide of China anyway)

It seems - because the difference in dept of field - that these two shots are made with different f-stops. I think a comparison like this is only useful when both shots are made with the same f-stop.

Erik.

I just got confirmed by the maker. These two photos are all taken at f/2.0. I guess the different depth of field is because they are not focused on the same object. They just want to test the anti-flare performance. And he also mentioned that after they stoped down to f/2.8, the flare almost disappeared.

Hi Kevin,

This is perfect timing -- I was just seeking a v1 Summicron & was considering a Summaron due to the relative 'affordability'...

Please let me know once this lens becomes available for order; I'd love one in black.

No problem! I will put you on the list. Thank you for your support.

I NEED one! In black or brushed chrome, or whatever the original v1 is. 🙂

Sure! I will keep one for you.

And just to let other forum members who are also interested in this lens know, I will go through all the posts and make sure to keep the lens for the people who want one. Unless all the lenses in the first batch are reserved.

Kevin, I have been following this thread and project since your first post about it. From what I have seen, the lens maker is doing a superb job creating the replica.
I am very interested to know when the lens will become available, and would love to get a copy.
Thank you for all your work with comparison photos.

Thank you for your comment! It means a lot. I will let you guys know when it is available.

If it's possible to get a coated lens, I'd like to have a black paint one.

I'm going to China next week and will stay there until the end of November, is it possible to order one there in CNY and to have it delivered domestically ?

Kevin, I didn't realise you were keeping a list on behalf of the maker, so please put me down for a black paint multi-coat!
It's a fine effort this chap is making. Please thank him for us all.
