[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

I used the M9 at ISO 160 with the 35/2 Summicron replica just an hour ago.

Wonderful to see replica lens shots taken on both film as well as digital. Thanks Charles and Raid...all lovely shots!

Question Raid. On that first color image, the top right and left side corners show a intense blue/cyan sky. Was that image taken wide open. If so, the lens vignetting would probably be the explanation.

Very very nice! I'll put a colour film through at some point, but there will be no urgency to that at all.

It is undoubtedly a beautiful lens!

It's a beautiful film, which I took a long time to love. Apart from the low speed to get the lens wide open, it is very high resolution, which has to be the test for me of a good lens. But it's £12 a roll to replace, so the next test roll is a £2.20 roll of Foma 200!

Foma 200 is very good! I just processed three rolls (Foma 100 (35mm), 120 of Foma 200 and TMAX 400) and then scanned them all. When looking at the scans I thought I knew which was the TMAX but it turned out to be the Foma 200. I have a bunch of Foma 100 to get through (bulk and 120) but after that I'm moving to Foma 200.

Raid, are those in-camera jpegs and did you have any manual lens selection
(I'll assume you didn't get it coded) set on the camera body?

I've been shooting a lot too (to the point of buying a 30m roll for self-loading) and apart from the occasional surface imperfection I think it's great. I have been told it has some T grain in the mix, which would explain the similarity. In current light it is superb for me at 125 in Pyro, but I'll return to things like HP5 when the inevitable autumn appears.

No, I tweaked them with PS since this lens (like the Summicron) does not give great colors with overcast days. I did not get it coded.

Some photos from yesterday's photo walk with the M2. All on original Fuji Acros 100 at 64, developed in the last dregs of my bottle of PMK Pyro. I wanted to get as wide open as possible for a few, but the light was still very good.

I focussed on the lock body - focus perfect at f2. Notice the spiders webs and the bokeh, which is decent.

Beautiful lens - I couldn't be happier.

Nice work Charles! How do you like the weight/balance of the M2 + 35mm? Here in N America, Acros is only about 2x the cost of Foma. The 200 isn't widely available. Enjoy the new lens!

Thanks Greg - I love the 35mm on the M2 It feels balanced and the weight saving vs the goggled Summaron, while small, feels more than it is. I took out the M3 today with a 35mm viewfinder and really didn't enjoy it. Henceforth it will be only M2 or M5 with this little gem. Which is rather sad for my M3, but such is life.

I'd dearly love the Acros to be cheaper because it is just fabulous, but apart from the Foma costing a lot less (which is not really much of an issue) that extra stop is immensely useful in a British summer!

The weight of the replica Summicron, including shade, is exactly the same as the (steel rim) 35mm Summilux including the Ollux: 245 grams. Now it is clear why Leitz choose to make the 8 elements Summicron 35mm lens in aluminium. The replica is certainly not a light weight lens.

My early Summaron 35mm f/2.8 is only 133 grammes. (Later versions are heavier.)

.....Erik, I was alluding to the difference between the M3 with a goggled lens (which would drive me to use an SBLOO or something else).... rather than the weight difference between the lenses alone. Personally, I love the brass-mounted Summaron, more than any alu-mounted Summicron (35 or 50)

O, yes, I also like it when things have some weight, but that the weight of the replica is the same as a steel rim Summilux was for me a surprise: the replica is a much smaller lens.

Erik.

Yes, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of someone throwing that at me. It is dense.

......should we make a comparison vs Summaron 2.8 & Steel-rim Summilux as well? You know 33'/sec/sec ? 😉 completely scientific....
