This was asked to me by a friend and fellow photographer but I am also interested in your answers.

Suppose you have access to a like new X1Pro body at a discount price such that the body plus 35mm lens costs the same as a slightly overpriced X100s (overpriced because of low availability, I suppose) which one would you pick?

My answer involved of course the difference between a 35mm and a 23mm lens, but I suppose he has worked out this; at any rate, he could of course buy all the lenses in the world should he go to the X1Pro, but was essentially that I would pick the X1Pro any day just because...I don't like buying overpriced items just because they are not available...

However, I must recognize that it was not a answer based on any photographic consideration (I never used any of the two cameras) and that you might have better insight supposing that you are ok with paying more than the suggested price for something just because you want/need it now (no, my friend doesn't "need" the camera, it is just GAS, but anyway).

Which one would you pick?

The x100 is smaller and has its own sort of vibe. The x-pro1 is larger and more ergnomically comfortable. The x100 is the only way to get a 35mm equiv lens, the x-pro1 has the best 50mm equiv around.

He really needs to feel them both in the hands. I really like the x-pro1s ergonomics - its leica M size when as the x100 is a bit thinner and more fiddly to use. In a few months the fujifilm 23mm f1.4 will be out as well - something to consider.

Another way to think about it.. X100 vs x100s vs xe1 w/ 27 pancake all end up about same overall size.

X100 would be a cheapest and if not of fan of xtran sensor then the best way to go since it was a 12mp Bayer one. I still have mine and don't plan to replace it until it gives up the ghost.

X100s has split image and better version of focus peaking then either xe1 or xp1. Plus the CPU and digital path performance has doubled. It probably has the basics improvements we will c in the next gen xp or xe camera bodies. It has the fastest af of all the Fuji cameras.

Xe1 w/ 27f2.8 pancake maybe in the same size as x100, if size was one of the factors for your friend. The 42 fov is a real nice balance. For me this is as close to a digital Leica CL as I will ever get. Better evf then the xp1.. Plus the use of all third party lenses via third party mount adapters.

Xp1 if size does not matter.. Other things to consider is that the bigger heavier body helps balance big glass like a Nikon 180f2.8 for example. Heavier body helps dampen effects of shutter release.

Well, yeah, but with Zeiss starting the Touit X-mount line and already having a 24mm f1.8 Sonnar T* in E-mount I'd really be surprised if in a very short time there would be no equivalent at least from Zeiss for the X1Pro.

Mmmh, I think he has a X1Pro in mind (a specific, one, from some dealer) and that he likes that better than the Xe1 etc but had previously considered and lusted after the X100s, so I think he is really only considering the two. Apparently, the decision was made harder by the fact that they come to about the same price within a couple of dollars and that the X100s is overpriced, at least if compared to the recommended price. My other solution which I think would be the better for him, was to wait till the X100s comes down to the right price and buy that camera if that's what he likes. As most of us he has way too many cameras and doesn't need one specific one for a job or something, just good old GAS.
