Hello all, I have always been on the MF Modern threads with Mamiya 7II systems. Always wondered about the Leica forums. Well, all of sudden a like new MP for 1700 CDN came my way. Bought it.. Then a 50mm f2 beckoned me, bought it too.

All I can say now, is I understand what all you people were talking about. Fantastic camera, great phots, ease os use, etc...

Now I need advice as a humble leica newbie:
If you were to buy a used black 28mm, what wuold it be? Dont want to sell the farm though.

Cheers, Alex

congrats to the new MP !

I think the best price /use value has the VC Ultron 1.9/28. I actually don´t have one - but if I would buy a 28mm I would look on it.
I do have one, and it needs an overhaul: sticky focusing mount. It's a big fat bugger too.

But then, I'm not a great 28mm fan.

Cheers,

R.

If you do not wear glasses, the 28mm has the advantage of being able to avoid the external VF. If you want to get in trouble right away, get the Biogon 28, you will have a glimpse into the Zeiss world. If you are a bit of a landscape guy too, the most impressive lens to get is the 25 Biogon. A cheap alternative for outdoors which a lot of people like, would be the CV 28/3.5.
Here's a Biogon 25 shot handheld:

I'm surprised no one ha mentioned the Hexanon 28mm.

Hey Alex. I'm also a Mamiya 7 shooter from Canada, er, Quebec. Same thing I think. I'm picking up an M6TTL with a 0.58VF this weekend and am putting a Zeiss 35/2 Biogon on the puppy. Could you share your reasons for adopting the Leica M6 into your arsenal? When do you reach for the Mamiya vs the Leica. Are you satisfied with the final image quality from 35mm after having shot 6x7?

The 28mm Summicron goes for crazy money - partly I suspect due to M8 owners trying to achieve a 35mm lens perspective on their wonky digi-cams!! The obvious contenders at 28mm are the Elmarit, Biogon and Hexanon.

The Biogon offers the tempting advantage of there being a 35mm and 25mm Biogon available with the Zeiss signature should you wish to expand, at a very reasonable cost.

i actually have the new MP not the M6. I have been using the Mamiya for years and lately found that I rarely go over 8x10, so what is the point. THe leica has so far been as good or better. Besides if I want enlargement I go for my Toho Fc-45x with 150 sironar s and that blows away any 6x7.

When I used SLRs I loved the 28mm length. Now in LeicaLand you have the fantastic 24 & 35mm lenses. Somehow (at least to me) the 35 is a more comfortable wide-angle lens on a rangefinder body and the 28 seems to be lost. Also it doesn't help that the M8 crowd have driven the price through the roof.

price cap?

if you're ok with external viewfinders, the zeiss 25mm is hot. if not, the 28mm or 35mm. the 35 is another hot zeiss lens, while the 28mm m-hexanon gets more buzz on the internet.
