New to Xpan and wonder if Epson V750 can scan negatives

As a new Xpan owner, I'm researching how to best scan the negatives.

I found one suggestion from a Hasselblad forum on a web search I did for using the medium format film holder, with the epson scanner setting at 6x7 negative size together with a flat piece of cardboard inserted in the opening of the holder to mask horizontally the area not occupied by the thin width negative and to help support the free edge, too. I would probably also consider a glass piece on top to press the negative flat.

Has anyone used this method, or know of a better one with the Epson scanner?

I'm also open to trying a different scanner, if it is better suited scanning panoramic negatives.

The 35mm film holders for the V700 (which are the same as the V750 holders) have frames that can hold six (6) 35mm negs. So I imagine you could scan xpan negs in that holder? Perhaps use a "betterscanning.com" glass insert to hold down the negs in the holder. Unless I'm missing something (I've never scanned xpan negs) it seems like that would be easier than using the medium format holder with a mask.

The betterscanning site has a pic of the glass insert and the 35mm holder.

Dean, yes, you can fit the Xpan panoramic negative into the 35 mm negative holder with no trouble. But when you go to preview or scan, you get 24 mm x 36 mm or typical 35 mm images. The scanner does not seem to detect or adjust to a longer image size, i.e., 24 x 68 mm. That is the fundamental problem.

If you have the scanner on thumbnail then you won't get the panoramas. You have to click on normal (top of preview). It will show you the negs as is. You then click and drag the cursor (will be a +) to the desired size and then scan.

I just now followed the suggestions of benlees and aperture64 and obtained the desired size images on the Epson. Many thanks to all for educating me on how to do this!

When i scan my xpan negs with the V700, the 35mm frame holders seem to chop a little of the base off. It is the top bit the clips in which is causing the problem. I think your best option could be to use the Medium Format holder, or as someone else suggested, the betterscanning glass. They are expensive however at $30 each.

Though as Jubb Jubb says, the 35mm holders are a bit too tight. So it's fiddly to get the frame perfectly scanned.

I've ordered stuff from betterscanning, but it hasn't arrived yet. Though the Anti Newton Glass was really expensive - until I checked with my local glass supplier, who asks $5.20 per cm2.

The glass from Betterscanning sounds like a good idea. I am going to consider that for the size issue and also the possibility of flatter negatives in the holder.

I wanted some more rebate so filed down the holders a bit. Downside is less edge for neg grippage. Upside is I scan the entire frame.

One tip to do as well if you scan various formats regularly is to save your settings. For example, I save one setting as 35 1200 100 16 bit etc etc. = format/scan rez/size ratio/bit depth. As well if you select all the marquees prior to saving, they all come up when you preview again.

Hope this makes sense and it saves a lot of tedium when scanning.

Yes, saving settings is a habit I do need to get into as I use several formats.

I have had this scanner for several years, but have not taken advantage of all its features. I will save a setting like the one you suggested, and also make one for color negatives, too. Thank you.
