New Version Elmar 2.8 50 mm?

Had mine since Sunday 5/7/6 and find it excellent. I would not hesitate to use it at 2.8 if I needed. 4.0 in bright sun is excellent. Performance does not seem to degrade close up.

I have the old 2.8 also and the new is better at 4.0 than the old at 5.6 as far as sharpness goes.

I am not even considering selling the old 2.8 and 3.5 as the pictures have a certain look I can`t get with the new one.

The modern 50 Elmar is a great lens. Except for the one stop difference, you're not settling for less by buying it and not the Summicron.

I have the Summicron, Lux, as well as the Elmar 50. The others are faster and I suppose sharper, but the Elmar has a character all its own. It was my first lens and is still my all around favorite. And by Leica standards, it's a bargain. There are some examples in my gallery.

I think its an excellent lens. I got mine as a temporary replacement while a current Summicron was being serviced by Leica NJ and I liked it better than the Summicron which got returned to the dealer for credit. Below are a couple of shots from my gallery here:

Elmar 1

Elmar 2

Most of the shots of my Madrid gallery were taking with the *new* Elmar. I like the smooth focus ring, the compactness, the flare resistance, the chararacter that produces the lens. Its a great tiny lens. Have a great, great quality.

The 50/2.8 Elmar is the lens I use the most, an excellent high-performance 50. I have a recent Summicron, which also is wonderful, but I think that the Elmar has a higher success rate than the 'Cron, particularly under flare-prone conditions. It also is superb with high-contrast scenes (but not because it is low contrast, like some of the earlier Elmars).

Would this lens collapse fully on the alternateive M-mount cameras (R2a/R3a, Hexar RF, ZI)? I've read that the LTM version can't fully collapse on the Bessa R, so was curious.

Amazing Pics Trevor, Question about aperture?

Amazing Pics Trevor, Question about aperture?

Those pics were great. If only I could get my Elmar to see like your does:}

Do you find you have to open up the aperture a bit more with the Elmar . I find that many of my photos post f11 are rather dark

Best

The latest elmar-M can collapse into all Leica M bodies completely ... except the CL (and I assume the M5) due to those camera's metering arm. On the Bessa R2a and other Bessa m bodies, it will collapse nearly all the way in, but not completely due to a buffer/stop in the Bessa body. By contrast, the 50/2 collapsible summicron (which has a slightly taller profile than the elmar-m) will collapse completely.

The 50 Elmar-M is a wonderful highly underrated lens.
