Just consider the photography collection one could assemble with a 6.5 million dollar budget. Generally, Lik is marketing trough his own galleries-self described "luxury photography." I think it is reasonable to question the reality of this headline. It is amazing what one can sell the public. There is probably less than mets the eye here. I pity the fool who buys his photographs for an "investment."

To judge a piece of art by "prettiness" is naive at best.
It is judged by the originality of idea expressed. Has nothing to do with whether you would put it on a wall or not.
Gursky works with a concept. You don’t have to understand or agree with it, but it’s there. This crap is specifically a wall hanging material, with high price to boost the sales…

I find it difficult to assess how 'good' these images are from looking at a screen and without seeing them printed life size.. Maybe they will reveal something then that would appeal..

When you buy stocks of Microsoft (for example) do you care that they are printed on nice paper and delivered in a pretty wrapper? You don't, as long as they are guaranteed to grow in price. At this point certain pieces of art are considered to be good bankable commodities, and it does not matter weather they are pretty, likable, or you can find a better picture in gallery next door...

Is this print unique? Has the original file been trashed? If not, who owns the rights to make additional copies?

On the technical side: how big is the print? Were the inks dye or pigment? What paper is it printed on. USW.

Like some here, I have trouble believing this sale, at that price, actually took place.

Looking at what auction results I could find on line, none of his other work is selling anywhere near this price. I did find one result for the color version of this photo that sold for 15k USD. And a bunch that sold for less than the estimate.

Art collection is not that simple, it is seldom about the money, and more about timing and a clear vision.

Yes, the Times article is a good one that appears – appropriately – in the Sunday Business section. It presents Lik as a dubious marketing phenomenon, not as an artist, and the undertone is that it's a scam. Wealthy but naive consumers who've heard that 'art is a good investment' are conned by trained sales staffs in his chain of galleries located in tourist venues. The resale value of his prints is zilch, because nobody who collects art in general or photography in particular would want one. Google the Lik website, and you'll see an uninterrupted string of cliches.
