New X-T1 / big shutter count

I just purchased a X-T1 at a local dealer. This is a huge camera shop, with enormous turnover.

Trying the camera for the first time right now, I just noticed that the photo file name counter has started from 97xx! I just want to make sure this is normal. Has anybody had such an experience before?

Also the LCD of the camera was not covered under cellophane when I took it out of the box. Is it possible that I have been given a returned item?

What ultimately triggers my skepticism is the fact that the flash delivered with the camera does not function out-of-the-box. The camera simply does not recognize it...

Anyway, I have 10 days to return the product, but I can certainly benefit from a second opinion.

Exposure count looks too big for store demo camera...non working flash could be explained, someone dropped it on concrete floor. I would put it in a box and take back....

Are you sure it's not the card count that already reached 9,000 when you put it into the camera?

Return it, and insist on a new NON-Demo camera...

Then, in the store, put a good battery in it, attach the flash with good bats in it, and use you SD card and take a few photos... Check the Shutter Count......DO NOT RESET THE COUNTER....

I guess you have to check the Shutter count with the internal count devise, not the image number....

If, it is near '0', then the image number should be close also.
It should be on Folder 100, and under 100, if not 000....

I don't have older photos from X-T1 on my computer right now, but the lowest file # I see on my computer is DSCF0395. I don't remember fiddling with file name settings or resetting the count so I'd assume it started from 0001. Maybe you can check some sample photos from "1st rook" type of review sites?

I don't think the LCD came with protective film.

I don't remember using the flash even once so I can't really comment if you need to turn something on.

Funny observation. You are right. Although the camera showed that the memory card was empty, there were images left on the card shot with another camera. I had to put the card in the card reader on a computer to see that! And needless to say the file numbers terminated just one before the starting file number of the X-T1.

I guess the whole issue related to my bad experience with certain local dealers much more than the camera itself.

So, the flash is the main issue here... It simply seems defective.

Ken Rockwell's article on the XT-1 says that since Fuji doesn't seal their boxes, you should never buy them retail. You just don't know what you are getting. It's too bad retail stores do this to their customers. They are only shooting themselves in the foot.

Mine started at 0001. But I always format my cards when I put a new one in a camera before taking any pics.

I suspect the high count has to do with the state of the card you first installed.

I apologize if you have already poured over the manual and double checked these possibilities.


o The flash can not be used at current flash menu settings: See the list of the settings that can be used with the flash.
o The flash is lowered
o The DRIVE dial is rotated to BKT, CH, or CL: Rotate the dial to S
o The camera is in bracketing or continuous mode: Select single frame mode.
o The camera is in silent mode: Turn silent mode off

With the flash, you may have to turn a flash shooting mode on IN camera. It's in the menu. it's like that with my x-pro1 anyway.

Yes, I confirm that the issue had to do with the previous content of the memory card. Some test shots taken with x100s had been left on the card, and although the camera couldn't show them, it had counted them in when setting the seed for file numbering.

And yes, I have noticed that the Fuji boxes are not sealed. But the plastic bag inside the box was sealed with a hologram glued on the seam. Plus, this is supposedly the B&H of Montreal. Also, I have my little tricks to check if a camera is new: a good look at strap lugs, lens mount, around the buttons and under the VF cup is most of the time revealing enough. All seems fine. So, maybe I simply freaked out too much for nothing... 🙂

willie_901, thanks a lot! I did not know at all about the relationship between the silent mode and flash... I had checked every other setting. I find this rather strange, specially since I use all the cameras almost all the time in silent mode. I hope there is another way to turn off menu and focus sounds without interfering with flash.

I gradually understand what people mean when they complain about Fuji's menus. I'm a linux hacker and it took me hours yesterday to find again the "check focus" option that I had enabled by accident.

Yes, there is a way to customize the sounds. You can select which, if any, you want to hear.

I think something was lost in translation. Just substitute stealth for silent.

If your x100 is up to DSCF4000, and you stick that card in your new camera, the new camera's "count" will jump to 4001 on the next (or even first) shot. Probably an artifact of factory testing.
