In honor of today's opening of Darren Aronofsky's new blockbuster epic Noah I have posted my New York Magazine photo spread of the photograph I made at the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York in late September 2012. Getting the photo was quite an adventure -- cuts, scrapes, ruined shoes, pants, shirt 🙂 . I only shot a few frames with my Rolleiflex 2.8f fitted with a 1.5 yellow filter and loaded with Kodak Tmax 400 Iso black and white film -- exposure 1/250th f/8 and developed in Tmax developer and scanned at 300dpi 30"x 30" -- the print from an Epson 3880 looks amazing -- like a wet print without the waviness.
Prior to publication New York Magazine's Lane Brown interviewed me for some background information on my impressions of seeing the Ark set. I was surprised to later learn I had been quoted: "To see it in person, and know there's no CGI involved was incredible." "The set decorator brought in tree stumps that weren't there before, to give the effect that the ark was made with local lumber." "And there's no way Noah and his sons could have built such an enormous structure themselves. That would have taken 500 years."
Seeing the quote in print made me laugh. What do I know about construction? Zip! The only thing I ever built was a 8 wide by 24 long by 4 high (that's feet not cubits) skateboard half-pipe for my son. Even funnier, it landed me my own IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0905852/news?year=2012&
I'm a big fan of Darren Aronofsky's work, and plan on seeing Noah this afternoon -- I can't wait!
My Noah's Ark photo and also photos of David Blaine's Electrified stunt and the Seaside Heights New Jersey Jet Star Roller Coaster are all in my book titled Four at: http://store.blurb.com/ebooks/pe0ee2d4c28c0ef866a8f
