I'm planning a trip to New York the upcoming spring and was wondering about your knowledge of any good camerastores. I am thinking used equipment or pawnshops with used camera equipment while my wife spends HER money in the fashion stores.

B & H Photo is always a good bet, and you can go to their site and see what they have in stock.

B&H has a huge used section, but not really physically set up to browse or play around. Adorama has a few counters of used SLRs and RFs to play with. Not too much else out there. PhotoVillage is walking distance to Adorama. If you want to see more RF stuff. I was really impressed with that place. Drop a line if you need any local info.

Ken Hansen is no longer around. Try Photo Habitat, 928 Broadway? - 212-473-5665. Lots of used equipment. Photo Village - 1133 Broadway. These shops are located in the buildings and are on Broadway just a few blocks from each other. Not street level. Lens and Repro tends to be expensive. Adorama has loads of used stuff - Leicas, etc.. They'll let you haggle as well. Never bought used from B&H.

Pwan shops in New York are nonexistent anymore. They have all faded away over the last 15 years.

i bought something on ebay from a guy. when it arrived there was a note on a ken hansen card but with a sig that was not ken hansen.

the item was a fake and i had to near threaten the weasel for a refund.
he pretended to send a money order but i wanted it by paypal, since i had paid by pp, and told him i would return the m.o. when it showed.
he finally caved when i said i was going to complain to ebay and paypal.
the money order he 'sent' never showed up.

i did business with the real ken hansen in it's a day, a brand new cle kit and they were first rate. this guys is a pathetic loser.

Ken and everyone there for longer than a year were great. Those there for five years or more were world class folks. Jim ran the best Leica area I've ever seen.

I have not lived there in way too long, most of my favoriate haunts are gone.

I would say take some time at ICP and ICP Midtown. MOMA was good for photography too.

Agreed on KH – they were the proverbial class act, and I miss them a lot. Assuming they're still around (haven't stopped off there in a while) Photo Habitat, run by KH alumnus Walter Lew, is also great, run more or less in the KH mold. Worth a visit.

If I remember right, the pawn shops I went to were on 9th or 10th ave in the 50s. While I did cover much of Manhattan and few parts of Brooklyn and Queens, did not see a lot of other pawn shops. Photovillage would be a good place to stop off too.

Lot depends upon where she will be shoping and for how long. Cabs are everywhere, just bring cash and you can get most places, except during rush hour.
