New Zeiss Distagon T* 2/28 for F and K!!

No more than two weeks ago, I wrote Zeiss on line, and asked about a ZF 28/2.8. I can not believe my eyes!! Now, how will it compare against the Nikkor 28/2.8 Time to sell my 85/1.4 maybe? Time to get another F3HP?

kjoosten, thank you for this wonderful news!

My birthday is October 21st! :D

Hmmmm! I'd love to put the 28 up against the Pentax FA31 1.8 AL Limited. Anyone care to contribute to my research funding? :D

No, Bags I first dibs. I can compare it with both the black and silver versions of the 31 so it would be a fairer test. :D

(Oh and the Pentax 28/2K and 28/2A lenses ;) )

The 28mm lens that Zeiss announced is a 28/F2.0 [yes a 2.0] in "F"mount and in "K" mount. I guess magazines like Shutterbug, and others will be doing lens tests in the next little while. I wonder if this will change buying patterns for those who now have a option instead of going to a prime Nikkor or a Pentax lens? I think Zeiss with their ZM. ZF. ZS. ZA. ZV. have a market that really puts a strong competitive advantage against the other players!!

Well, Zeiss does not make AF lenses for any other mount except Minolta A. That makes their potential buyers a little different from "normal" Pentax and Nikon lenses, which are auto focusing. Nikon does still make some MF AI-s prime lenses, but they are mostly older designs from the 1980s and they probably do not sell all that much in any case, because there are a lot of Nikkor AI and AI-s lenses available in the secondhand market.

So, instead of competing with Nikon and Pentax, Zeiss is actually tapping a market that has been underutilized by them lately. You could even say that Zeiss is currently the only company that makes state-of-the-art manual focus lenses for SLR systems. Other than Leica for their R system, of course.
