Why do you guys prefer Rangefinder over SLR. I can understand price, and size. What else?

I just bought an excellent condition Nikon FE for far far less than a similar condition M anything and it is nearly as small. So I can't see price and size having much to with it.

The price of new RF cameras tend to be higher than film SLRs.

I dont get why you guys prefer a RF over an SLR. I've been enjoying SLR photography for a long time and have always thought that this was the top camera design for the best quality and potential in a picture. But then I learned about RF cameras and how many people prefer them for photography over SLRs. Why?

It's more a matter of style. In a good SLR you can see 100% of what will be on your image - no more no less. However in almost all RF designs you are able to see more than what is on the image and will not have a blackout at the instant of shooting.

Like many things in this world (Harley vs. Triumph, Colt vs. S&W, Islay vs. Highland whisky, etc) it has far more to do with personal tastes than anything quantifiable.

I don't really prefer any style over any other. Look at my list in my .sig and you'll see my tastes. About the only thing you'll be able to tell is that I like Canon, Graflex & Zeiss... 😉

Noise a SLR has a mirror up bang down bang.

TLR and rangefinder are comparable in noise, TLR is bulky, slower to focus.

No one complains I'm taking their photo except ManGo, who reminds me to remove the lens cap... one disadvantage is that you will take some lens cap photos...

It's the viewfinder. That seeing much more than is going on film really makes the world of difference. Didn't seem like that big a deal till I used one- then BAM! everything changed.

Quality of the final print does seem higher to me as well- I don't have any SLR negs I'd print at 1620 and find as sharp as those with my 50 Summicron.
