nex 5 - first impressions

Thanks kxl

Thanks kxl

Makes sense. The NEX is working out well!!

1x-10x zoom is a digital zoom not optical, so it needs electronic communications between body and lens -- at this time, I believe it works with the 16mm kit lens only.

ampguy (and others), i strongly recommend a screen protector. the nex screen is pretty soft like the M8 and scratches easily.

i got one of these (as opposed to a sticky type), it clips on perfectly and is pretty rugged:

seriously, the naked screen is very scratch prone. i know this from experience. :bang:
agree, got the the screen protector online fron Sony and it is worth the extra money ($7?) because it does not show smudges or fingerprints.

D'oh, I just saw that after a short googling.

I played around with a NEX 3 I got yesterday and have to say I'm extremely impressed. Handling is much better than I expected with the large lens and small body. The menu is straightforward (although quite different than what I was used to with Ricohs), IQ is leaps and bounds ahead of our Minotla D5D and Ricoh GX200, AF is snappy and quiet.

The only thing I need is a EVF, decent 35mm and 50mm eq lenses, and I'm ready to go! (It may even get me to shoot less film!)

A 50mm eq lens should be not that hard : thiking about the ZM 35/2 or CV 35/1.4. It gets more dificult if you try to look at 35 or 28 eq. that are not overly expensive : ZM 25 would be a little bit longer, ZM 21 is already expensive if you go for the 2.8 ( but even the 4.5 is pretty expensive as is the 25 for that matter ), the ZM 18 goes the same direction an they are new lenses so not that many on the used market and not that much of a price gain. Then you have the CV 21/4 or the CV15 - the last in the second version reportedly has less problems with color shift inthe corners.
At least that is what I have found out until now looking for that wide angle that is missing. Can't wait until my NEX-3 is here along with the M adapter. For the rest, I hope that the ZM 35/2 and the CV 90/3.5 will do the trick.

I have a Minolta MD 35mm and 24mm I plan to use. But then you have an adapter and MF, and I am hoping that there are decent e-mount primes coming.

When it comes to wides, the NEX's own 16/2.8 isn't bad at all.. There may be some color shift in the corners, but it's not ugly; there are no ugly sharpening artefacts in JPG around the color shifts.

The 16 combined with a 'fastish' 35 or 50 makes an excellent travel companion..
