Nex 7 and Leica 24mm f/1.4 Summilux = Fail

No - it is an accurate comparison. The Leica lens is actually WORSE on centre than placing a Coke Bottle in front of a pin-hole camera - why would anyone suggest this to be incorrect ??

If you read the current rolling review on LL, there is a new test of the Summilux and the new Zeiss 24mm f1.8. The Leica lens bests it wide open (I think it's by more than the author admits). But regardless of the performance of the Zeiss, it shows the Summilux does just fine on the Nex 7. Even better perhaps than a lens designed specifically for that system!

The challenge in matching the Nex 7 to legacy glass might be more in the demands of the 24 megapixel sensor than the microlenses, etc. The 24mp sensor will resolve finer detail than a 12 (Ricoh GXR) and so the limits of the lens are more likely to be reached before the sensor runs out of resolution.

thanks for pointing out the most recent review on LL. Looks like the camera is not producing weird color shifts or fuzzy images at the corners using either lens. Images look very good, IMO

Judging by those samples, the new Zeiss 24/1.8, is quite a decent performer but not exactly a milestone in optical achievement either.

'Milestone in optical achievment' was meant to be read tongue in cheek. 😉
Anyway, considering that it's an APS-C lens, $1000 for a moderately fast mild WA is quite expensive in my standards. Look at the price of the CV Nokton 35/1.2 - full frame and one full stop faster than the 24/1.8.
I believed that, at that price level, the performance would be in the league of a Zeiss ZM 35/2 or 35/2.8. At fist glance it doesn't seems so, but it's too soon to say nothing conclusive until many more samples from reviewers and final users are available..

Most Leica rangefinder wides aren't the best example for finding color shift, because Leica's designs have been more retrofocus for a while. Many of the CV and ZM wides are more symmetrical, and those are the lenses that are of concern on the NEX-7.

It's case by case with these wides, no doubt.

Not uncommon to see incredible centers and extra fuzzy edges with a host of RF wides--MANY leicas included--the little ones.

The tri elmar someone should buy me for xmas----apparently is perfect 🙂

I just bought a ZM18 because philber at FM posted a devastating shot up a few stories in Paris. Fantastic corner to corner.. Now if i can only replicate.

Besides tri-elmar no RF 21 is really good--that we know so far.

No evidence whatever n7 is worse in corner rez on any lens. Both n5 and n7 are just picky.

The cv 15 is actually doing better than ever on n5!

Howdy. Like I just mentioned on Fred Miranda, I have a hard time imagining that the NEX-7 will have the same color issues and vignetting in the corners, but not the same resolution issues as the NEX-5. It's a shame that Michael Reichmann didn't do corner resolution tests.

But MR is positively restrained in that respect compared to a couple of other regular contributors to LL...
