I see no travesty in posting a photo of your camera. It's a pride in ownership thing, like guys who own classic cars showing photos of their cars or proud grandparents showing photos of their grandchildren. It's good to see when people are grateful for what they have been blessed with in this life whether it's grandchildren, a classic car or a nice camera.

Can I post a photo of a classic auto in the Gallery? How about antique radios/TV sets? How about antique tractors and farm tools and barns and thingamagigs nobody uses any more?
I notice on Etsy on the Internet some people are selling cool-looking vintage box cameras and other people are selling photographs of vintage cameras. Sometimes the prices for the actual old camera and the photo copy are similar.

Actually, I never understood the need to take picture of camera with other camera anyway. But that's beside the point, perhaps.


Then again, I could never understand the need to explore what is one's favorite (or least favorite) focal length, or for example weather one need to photograph a cat with summicron rigid or with summicron collapsible and so forrh... "Man has to know his limitations"(c)

As a relative newbie here, I actually wish people would post more pictures of the cameras and lenses that are being discussed in some of the threads. A picture speaks a thousand words and it might help me identify a good lens/camera in the future.

I greatly enjoy both taking pictures with and of my cameras. I've never considered it odd.

On most forums, it's considered somewhat bad form to post about a thing without showing said thing. As the old saying goes: "This Thread Is Useless Without Pictures". Personally, since I don't know every brand and model of camera out there, I enjoy seeing a picture when a certain camera is brought up. Because of that, I also take pictures of every camera I own, so I can post them when someone asks about one.

Cameras, to me, are beautiful objects that deserve to be enjoyed for their technical features and build. Just like I can appreciate a nicely built car or fine mechanical watch.

I recently took this picture of most of my film cameras as of last month.

Most people would probably consider it boring - except for the 364 people who already viewed the picture the past four weeks 🙂

Several years ago there was a serious craze on RFF where people were taking pictures of their cameras next to cups of coffee.

I found this very odd and disturbing.

Hey, I have one single shot in my entire life featuring a camera and a cup of coffee and it's my avatar photo.

I haven't seen any on RFF but apparently there was once a craze! I can understand that some can find such crazes odd but I can't quite get the "disturbing" bit.

To me, life is just too short to be disturbed by the photos of cameras or coffees - alone or in combination with each other. ..

I take pictures of cameras because I like the way they look. Same reason I take pictures of people and flowers.

It's like metadata. Sometimes the metadata is more important, or useful (if you're the NSA) than the data itself. Same with cameras and photography.

Also, we want to support our film suppliers.

So what? Might as well be 3640 people. Yes, camera manufacturers and camera designers did a good job. So? What is in this picture of yours? Where are you in this?
This is not just about cameras. Sunset, sunrise, quite kitten or child.... All the same things.
In my opinion, successful ART picture cannot rest on content. It SHOULD NEVER rest on content. The idea is always primary, execution is secondary. Or tertiary. Good execution will never replace the absence of idea. Not to mention that this and most if pictures of cameras in gallery are not even executed well…

Well, I wholeheartedly disagree with your definition of Art, but that is just me. However, there is so much more to photography then Art. I for one don't think I'm making art. And, most importantly, most pictures of cameras aren't about Art, but are all about sharing. You seem to be against sharing 😉
