Do you guys find Black and White or Colour better for night shooting?

I cheerfully use both: see http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/ps lowlight.html. It's a mixture of low-light and night, but about a quarter of the pictures are night shots in the open air, and another quarter are night shots indoors.

This is, what I love the most and do it mainly - don't like the light during the day:

I shoot all night handheld - tried to get used to a tripod on several occasions - never felt right, always got in the way.
I am not setting up, planning or shooting a scene over and over - I wander the night and shoot, what I see - you can't do that with tripods.
The Leica is great for that.

I used to use Nikon DSLRs for that, but somehow they miss the magic. I guess, it's the glass.

While out last night, I set up my tripod and Hasselblad on a small side street. There was a light outside the building door, and a semi-lit stairway inside. I was shooting for the stairway. A car pulls up right between me and my subject, a lady rolls down her window and asks what I'm doing. I had my finger on the cable trigger ready to shoot, and she's parked there, not able to grasp the concept of night photography, but she's still parked there in my way, just shaking her head.... This went on for a few minutes before she finally left. If you don't 'get' it, just move along....

I live in Chicagoland, so night photography is always an option - even at 2AM! I prefer a tripod and digital camera to ascertain exposure. Four 30-sec shots were stacked to yield the image below. Canon 1Ds, 50 ASA, Yashica 300/5.6 ML C, distance-to-subject 12mi. 🙂
