Nikkor 8.5cm f/2 -- Black and Chrome

Depends on condition, Mike. The hood is pretty rare. If the lens is clean
it's a good price, both in LTM or S mount.

Roland.

Thanks Roland, this one is in S mount, and the lens is pretty clean. I'll double-check it first. The only thing holding me back is the size......

$350 is the upper end of the price range, but maybe the hood is important for collectors, and it may drive the price up. Don't hesitate because of lens size; it is an awesome lens.

Mike,

That is higher than I paid. Mine came with a off brand lens hood, clip-on like the nikon, but only a Japan marking on it. I have several other clip-on but this one is very snug to the lens and does not add a lot of size when it's reversed.

Bill,
That is the correct hood. The clip-on hood came in two variations, early ones came like yours, simply engraved Japan, later they had full engraving.

I saw a 10.5cm on ebay a couple of days ago:

Did over $400!! No Hood included!!!

Raid, you did good.

Kiu

Thanks everyone for the info., I'm still wavering between the 85 f2 and the 105. The 105 would work well with the framelines on my S3, but I could fudge the 85 between the 105 and 50 framelines.....

I think I'll just be patient right now.

This is indeed a tough one ... the 85/2 at f2.5 does not behave very differently,
is smaller, has shorter min. focus, is easier to focus, and fast when you need it 🙂
Plus when you frame more conservatively portraits are easier to
crop to 8x10 🙂

Roland,
You are not making it a tough one! 😀
I prefer the 105mm lens. You prefer the 85mm lens [it seems that way]🙂

Kiu,

I was just thinking the same to myself! [and then I read your comment addressed to me] 😀
Yes, I did well. The lens is an awesome mean razor sharp photo machine.

Here's a shot of the 8.5cm f2 and the 10.5cm f2.5 side by side. As the photo shows, the 10.5cm f2.5 lens is substantially larger (larger photo here).

The chrome one that I currently own and use came with a no-name M adapter, Canon 48mm series VII adapter, and a straight sided Tiffen lens shade which is lined with black flocking. The glass is clean but the chrome on the lens looks like it was carried around for a few years in a sack of gravel and the exterior of the shade is corroded to a pleasant matte finish. Forty odd years ago, when it looked a bit closer to new, I paid $85 for it including adapters, hood, and caps. It's earned its keep over the years and it's my favorite medium tele/portrait lens. A little crudely carved piece of red toothbrush handle serves as a red dot, but the now yellowed epoxy holding it in place would look really bad if the lens barrel didn't look uglier.

I bought Roland's chrome 85/2 LTM lens while he bought Kiu's 105mm/2.5 LTM lens. I then bought from someone else a 105mm/2.5 LTM lens.

Raid

Yes, and I bought Raid's 85/2 chrome but got 2 black versions for LTM. In the end, I kept one black LTM version.
