I was wondering if anyone uses the 8.5cm lens on the S3. I know there are 10.5cm frame lines; can those be used in any manner to figure out the framing for 8.5? Any strategies?

Also, would anyone suggest 8.5 or 10.5 as the first telephoto to get?
I'm new to the Nikon S3. Coming from the Leica M world, I never got a lens longer than 90mm, so 105mm seems like new territory; 85mm is something I can wrap my head around.

Rather than a second S, I'd recommend going with a F and a plain prism for telephotos.

Focus, aperture, shutter speed, heck the body as a whole all turns and feels the same. Pick up a classic 105/2.5 P and use the RF for 50 and below. The 85/1.8 is a wonderful lens too, but sometimes harder to track down.

I've got both the Nikon 85 and 105 rangefinder lenses and use them both on my S3 bodies.
Framing for the 85 is (obviously) somewhere in between the lines for the 105 and 50mm lenses, and truly I've never had an instance with the 85 where just using that rule of thumb caused me to lose a shot. If you need more precision than that, you might get a clip-on 85mm viewfinder.
Having said all that, my 85 is one of the early, very heavy ones without f-stop detents, and despite being a tiny bit faster, I use the 105 much more often. So if you want an opinion, I'd suggest getting the 105 over the 85.

I got late into the Nikon S system as I resisted for years to prevent that GAS while shooting mainly Leica M gear.

A friend sold me a 50mm Millennium which finally broke that pledge and I am knee deep in a Nikon RF addiction.

I too was looking into either the 105/2.5 or 85/2 Nikkor and knew them both as I have LTM Nikkor lenses for some time.

The 105/2.5 is optically seriously impressive even by today's standards comparing with modern Leica lenses. It sure was many, many decades ahead of its time when it was introduced new in the 1950's. It is extremely sharp and detailed and yet has a very lovely smooth character falling out of focus when used for portraits - a truly outstanding lens.

The best is that it usually sells for a lot less than 85/2 in similar condition.
There are also a lot more 105 mm lenses available, so it is fairly easy to find a nice one.

I am really happy that I found the 105mm first (just yesterday I found that 85/2 I also wanted).

I use them on a SP so I can imagine just getting the 105 for use on a S3 is ideal and you don't loose anything. The 105mm is not a lesser lens it is just not as favored a focal length by RF users.

Nikkor 105f2.5 on an SP. Coulden't find anyone willing to pose, so I settled for this gull on top of my car. Orwo UN 54 film.
The 105f2.5 is a bigger lens than the 86f2 - but it is a legend - and deservedly so. The 85 is good - and you can use it on a S3 by estimating between 105 and 50 frames. I use the 85 more than the 105, but that has more to do with "bulk" of the 105.

I also got into Nikon Rfs not that long ago, just one body but I do have 35 1.8, 50 1.4, 105 2.5 and the 135 and find I mostly just use the 35, but the 35 and the 105 is a nice combo but it is a seriously heavy lens for the size 555g v 455g for a pre ai version.

I remember I've used the 105mm a lot on my Nikkormat FTn in the seventies. I too have a 105mm f/2.5 for my Nikon rangefinders, but I've never used that combination because of it's weight.

I have both the 85/2 (black) and the 105/2.5 that I use on my SP. As other have said the 105 is on the heavy side. As to IQ - yes the 105 probably edges out the 85 but IMO only just. I find a Nikkor 105/2.5 is better suited to an SLR for me.
I also have the VC 85/3.5 S version and it's IQ from wide open easily beats the Nikkors . It's even smaller and lighter than the Nikkor 85 and build quality is excellent - both 85's fit better the rangefinder experience than the 105 for me. I used the 85's on an S2 I had - used a Leica 90 external finder and it worked fine
