As i sit here on a break during my night shift, I have spotted a cosmetically challenged but mechanically and optically sound Nikkor P 105 F2.5................................its crying out buy me and as its is my birthday today I am very tempted to get it...................................................................................................I will let you know if I give in to temptation, I have heard that this lens is a true great in the Nikon stable

Optically the PC and AIS worked best for me. I guess I preferred the AIS because of the built in hood. Maybe my copy of the P is off a bit.

But the 105 sonnar P looks fabulous on a plain prism F. One of the prettiest combos around.

I am not sure "Afghan Girl" was done with it? Maybe the 180mm? Anyway all Nikkors are sharp. Note as an owner of said model "105mm f2.5 P" it is SOFT at Maximum aperture and next one! It is a portrait lens just like the 150mm Sonnar on Hasselblad V series. Also soft.
Mine has been a remarkable lens.Always brilliant. It has needed a repair or two..Well worth getting!

I use the SLR Sonnar version of this lens and also a RF version that also is a Sonnar. It is my favorite tele lens. I like it more than my 75mm/1.4 Lux.

Hi how do I identify the SLR Sonnar version, the lens Im looking at is the P vaiant non ai 105 .2.5 nikkor

Checking the serial number is the surefire way. Check against Roland Vink's excellent website below.

http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html#105

The first block of serial numbers from 120101 to 286276 are the early version Sonnars.

The second block of serial numbers from 407301 to 1053928 are the later version Planars.

The first version of the SLR lens was a Sonnar. The second version is "improved" but is not a Sonnar. Your lens pre-AI should be the Sonnar version, I think.

No, indeed the majority of them are not, before AI they had made ca. 125,000 Sonnars and 190,000 Gauss types. The most obvious distinction would be that all pre AI lenses with "Nikon" on the front ring are the Double Gauss type. The inverse is not absolutely true, the transition from Sonnar to Double Gauss was about a month before they switched from "Nippon Kogaku Japan" to "Nikon", so there are a few hundred "Nippon Kogaku Japan" branded later type 105'es around (these all have 40xxxx serials).
