For anyone who cares about the appearance of his kit, I say a scalloped metal focusing grip with half its paint off is preferable to a rubber diamondy-pattern grip in like-new condition! That is to say, sexy lens you've bought there.
Purists will say who cares about appearance if you're comparing two optically similar lenses and you can make the same pictures with either; stop looking at your lenses instead of through them, etc. I get that too...
Internet sources say that the post war RF 105 was ported directly to Nikon's SLR format in 1959. I purchased one of the originals and a Nikon Ftn Photomic in 1969. Both are long gone. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think about that lens. A friend bought one from KEH in EX condition in 2010. It looked new. Brought back fond memories. Get it.
So I have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful condition 105-P that was Ai'd professionally. Should I jump on it? Or keep looking for an Ai or Ais version?
I have exactly the same lens and had always thought it was the gaussified version (love that phrase). The Nikon Compendium says in 1972 the lens was modified to five elements in four groups and it also received a smaller minimum aperture of f/32. Mine at least produces a different style image with head and shoulders portraits than my Contax mount Nkon P f/2.5
It wasn't until I came across this thread that I was overcome by the sudden need for this lens. Thought about it for two whole days before hitting 'buy'. This is on its way now, no thanks to you all...oh, and a hood too.
If i was to have only one lens for my SLR, it would be the 105mm f2.5.
i have the older Sonnar version. Actually it's an improvement on the original Zeiss Sonnar.
Just as a voice of dissent and perhaps reason: It probably is the unused lens I'm least willing to split with. But unused it is, just like my 135mm lenses. As much as I'd like to use it for its optical qualities, I find little to no applications for it. It seems to be a little bit past my comfortable communication distance, at least all attempts to shoot portrait with it end with cropped faces...
I was reading this thread last Wednesday and thinking that, heck I would like to try the 105 Sonnar and wouldn't you know, I went to a yard sale and bought an immaculate one, marked at $50 with 50% off. So I bought that and a 28 f2 and a 35 f2 and a 55 f3.5 macro and a black 65XXX F photomic with a 50f 1.4 and some other bits and bobs. and now I a
Like a dog with two tails. The stuff looks like it was never used.
Yeah what the heck! Why are my local garage sales always a bust, or someone charges $200 for a film point & shoot because it is "retro". *sigh*
Side note: Does anyone have any tips for getting the lens hood for this guy to stay on securely? Mine pops off in the slightest of breeze or even if I turn around too fast. I have to keep chasing the darn thing as I sling my F3 over my shoulder the hood will pop off and roll away.
