What does the "MAT" mean?
I know that for Tokai guitars, they had a MAT line, meaning "most advanced technology"
But it seems that's specifically not the case, at least for the Nikon products.
What does it mean? wondered for years.

'AutoMATic' = more suitable for amateurs, who are less likely to be offended by automation. NikkorMAT = cheap Nikon (but still excellent), YashicaMAT = more 'user-friendly' than the average TLR.

You forgot the Hugo Meyer 50mm f1.5 Plasmat .
One of the first speed lens made to fit a Leica screw mount camera.
I don't think this one was priced in the "amateur " category when it came out so long ago.

Also Heidosmat viewing lenses. But insofar as it means anything, and I'm not sure it does, I think the autoMATic is probably as good as any, at least as applied to cameras (if not lenses).

Funny... Nikkormats are rugged and were common in vietnam. Plus the controls are about all the same. They just lack the flash settings (irrelevant now).
