anyone have experience with this one? Much different than TE 135 variations? What's a decent price for one in "excellent +" condition.

It's a good lens. Long and heavy, but tripod mount. Was easier to focus than the Tele Elmar for me, don't know why, but other people confirm this. 43mm filter size. Here is an example shot:

Nice OOF behavior, mellow colors, and very sharp.

There is also a nice report on Dante's web site.

Value between US 100 and 150 in chrome and around 200 in black.
The Canon 135/3.5 also runs between 100 and 140, and is supposed
to be of similar quality.

Roland.

Man, that's the first time I've thought to replace "braaaaaaaains" with "graaaaaaaain". That's me, the grain-eating zombie portraitist.

Graaaaaaaaaain. Gotta love that grain.

"Graaaaaaaaaain...give me all your graaaaain..."

Yes. Off topic, but grain is the reason I still use film. I find it funny, but there are actually programs that put grain INTO digital photos now. To me, black and white looks funny without a bit of grain, but a lot of shots look better with a lot of it.

Go figure.

But anyway, I love that shot. The lens seems really good for the price.

Not hard to find.

Not hard to find.

if you fish on ebay long enough you can grab one for under $100 but normally without caps and hood.
Raid had one for sale right here in the classifieds, may be you should contact him.

I had two such lenses, so I sold one and kept one. Both came will the fancy lens hood and adapter.

Thanks guys. I like the shots I've seen posted. I was going to look for a used APO Telyt, but It won't make that much of a difference. Less than 1/2 my shooting is outdoors anyway. Maybe I'll pick one up soon.

Waiting for a black one myself, at no such bargain, but still cheap compared to anything Leica but a Hektor. The Black lens looks very cool from the pics.

After seeing the Black Crowned Night Heron picture from Ferider I am doubly excited! We have those Herons in Boston in June, but they are very skittish. I've not got so close even with a 180 or 300mm lens. Good show!

Congrats,
Let me know how you like it!!

I have been eying the black one myself, after liking the chrome one, and loving my black 85/2.

The Heron was taken in a "voltiere" (not sure if this word exists in English ?).

We have some places here (Oakland) were you can get close enough,
but this one was not free.

Roland.

Roland,
Was it you who posted that you were giving up all but 2 lenses in order to improve you style/compositional technique? I've been reading a text by Ralph Gibson which espouses a similar philosphy. Gibson beleives that by using only a 50mm lens for a number of years the photographer will master framing and perspective becuase the photog will intuitively walk to the proper distance from the subject in order to raise the camera to the eye and shoot with no hesitation. Without this type of "training," Gibson says, the photographer will always hesitate before shooting. In reading the passage, I thought of the post I had read here.

Yes, Steve, and I'm still sticking to it (see my avatar and PAW). Doesn't mean I cannt buy other lenses though 🙂

Roland.

I also do similarly; I mostly use a 50mm lens or a 35mm lens, but I enjoy having many lenses for those special times .... 🙂
