nikon 8000 light bleeding issue with masks

hey all. im trying to scan some XPAN shots ive taken. i have the nikon 8000 and the rotating glass holder which comes with the xpan mask which i THINK i am using properly (if anyone have instructions on how to use the mask please let me know).

the problem is i get these MASSIVE light bleeding into my shots making one side over exposed.

anyone seen this before? Of course i am referring to the yellow "burnt" looking areas around the sides of the film.

if anyone is getting good results can you PLEASE take a short video of you using the mask on the rotating film holder! PLEASE!

Nothing needs to be cleaned. This is a well known design flaw of both the LS-8000 and LS-9000 scanners. You're seeing flare. The solution is to use paper ot black tape to mask off the big open area on one end of the plastic mask that Nikon provides, and if your negs are too narrow to fill the whole width, you need to mask that off too. Solves the problem. NOW, you'll notice that if you use tape that is too thick, or if you lay paper on top of the plastic mask, it'll affect scan sharpeness UNLESS you put the same material around all 4 sides so the neg sits at the same height all the way round. Yes, it is a gigantic pain and is a serious design flaw that makes these scanners much less efficient to use. But once you jump through the hoops the scans are perfect.

do you put the neg on TOP of the mask or below the mask?

On top. If the negative directly contacts the bottom glass, you'll get Moire rings. The mask elevates the film just slightly above the glass, preventing this.

No, it can find the film edge without the hole. I do think that if you are scanning color negatives that the hole lets it read the color of the film's orange base so it can compensate for it properly. I don't scan any color negs so I am not sure if covering the hole makes them scan badly.
