I have a Coolpix 950. That swivel-series of Coolpixes used to be great though not very wide-angled zooms which began at 38mm. Unfortunately Nikon failed to carry on with it in good style. The S4 and S10 which also are Swivel-Coolpixes have less manual control and smaller sensors compared to the 9xx-series and the 4500 being the last one with good manual control and 1/1.8" sensor.

I use that 950 mostly for streetphoto and casual shooting. The strong point with that swivel design is that the camera can be used in a TLR like style, at waist level. I tested it with first with the 990 but was driven nuts by the terrible jpeg output which not improved to what it should be despite much tweaking with in camera parameters and also the right hand grip which protrudes noticeably more compared to the 950, which made it very easy to tilt the camera slightly to the left accidentally.
The total lag is not bad with focus preset. But with the lcd turned off the lag is like one second which is bad. Continues mode and being prepared to time the moment helps.
