Nikon and Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi made a car called the Sigma (it was a dog!) ... this is all getting really weird! 😀

Still can't when this happened. All these years and I never knew this. Back in the 80's I had a Mitsubishi mini van and a Nikon FE. I had no idea they were cousins.
In 1919 the Mitsubishi Bank was founded and during the following decennia many companies/industries were incorporated. Among them was Nikon Corporation. Through the years the Mitsubishi keiretsu has been grown into one of the largest industrial enterprises in the world.

"Below a short list of companies and industries that are member of the Mitsubishi keiretsu.

The CEO's of these companies - called the 'Friday Club' (Mitsubishi Kinyokai) - are meeting every second friday of every month for exchanging the latest (business) news. It is clear that this frequent exchange of information is strengthening mutual confidence.

Now if you had a Kirin beer in that Mitsubishi mini van with that Nikon SLR loaded with Fuji film on the passenger seat then you would have been totally Mitsubishied to the hilt.

I found this on Photonet:

"Quoting from Simon Stafford's 'The new Nikon Compendium' (2003):

The Nikon story began on 25th July 1917 when, with the support of the Japanese industrial giant, Mitsubishi Group, and the Imperial Japanese Navy a new company called 'Nippon Kogaku K.K.' was formed.

Mitsubishi has been there from the very beginning."

I believe they are members of a keiretsu, not fully owned by Mitsubishi (though Mitsubishi itself is HUGE).

"The Mitsubishi group of companies form a loose entity, the Mitsubishi Keiretsu..."

Basically its common practice for big firms in Japan to own shares in other big firms. This has lead to an intertwined mess of all the big firms being partially owned by all the other big firms...

Nikon is an independent company in the western sense, reports its own independent financial earnings report, has its own stock http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/7731:JP .. etc.

There's a 104 year old monk who lives in a cave in Hokkaido who runs the whole thing.

He never speaks, just sends a note with a runner when he wants something done.
