Nikon AR-2 vs AR-3 cable release. Whats the difference?

Does anyone here know the difference between these two cable releases.

One uses the Leica/Nikon/Yashica screw on attachment and the other(AR-3) is standard.

FWIW there were adapters to go both ways. The most common is from standard to Nikon the other is pretty uncommon.
