I'm planning to update my Minolta dual scan II to something faster and better. One choice is the DiMage 5400 II but I also look at Nikons models. (Nikon has never let me down when it comes to cameras).

Can someone tell me how fast the coolscan 5000 ED is when scanning color and B/W with all ICE and other tools turned off? I'm interested in the time from when you press the scan button to when the file is saved to disk and the scanner beginns to scan next image on the strip.

I recently bought one and it is very fast. The manual claims 20 secs scan time with all functions turned off - I would say it was nearer 30 secs per neg including film transport. However in a real world scenario, I can't understand why you woud not want to use ICE if it was an available option - it just saves so much time. Depending on the additional options selected ICE, GEM, ROC, DEE etc... a single negative can take between 2-4 mins. The quality of the scans however is amazing. ICE and most of the other options only work with colour films and not B&W (although it does work with Chromogenic B&W films like Kodak Portra BW / CN400)
