Seems like my scanner is in need of some repair, any ideas on things I can try or recommendations for repair are definitely appreciated, here's the deal:

For the last few weeks when I've gone to turn on my Coolscan I've had a few weird issues with having to restart the computer (Mac OSX w/ Vuescan), restart the scanner, etc, prior to this no problems really at all, nothing new added to the computer in the last year or so. Then this last week I started having a problem where it didn't seem like the lamp was exposing correctly but only with 35mm, medium format worked fine. I set the exposure manually in Vuescan to 100 for the 35mm and it once again worked fine.

Fast forward to this weekend, I use the scanner Friday for a couple of hours, everything is fine. I forget to turn it off for several hours following that but eventually remember to turn it off. Last night I turn it back on—nothing, no green light, no sound, nothing, until I turn it off and the green light flashes once. I try various things, eventually I get the light to come on and blink intermittently along with the sound of the scanner trying to spit out a negative holder (no holder inserted). More experiments basically give me different combinations of the same but nothing with a solid green light or ability to scan. Seems like Vuescan can see the scanner when I get the light and scanner noise but obviously doesn't work.

I definitely want to get this thing fixed and probably have given a good once over seeing that the years of spare parts and service are probably numbered. Is it best to send it to Nikon directly or are there other places that do decent service. I've read some good review of Precision but also one horrible one so wondering what people's experience has been with them as well as with anyplace else. As it says above, any information is helpful at this point and greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

I would send it to Nikon. There will come a time when you can't and then it will be time to ask where to send it.. if there are parts.

Thanks, that's sort of what I thought. Anyone know if there's a service center on the west coast anywhere or is New York the only option?

My dealer told me that Nikon says that they will have parts and service for 5 years after an item is officially discontinued. I'm probably going to send my Coolscan 5000 in for cleaning and service soon, before it can't be serviced by Nikon.

Yea, I figure it might be worth it just to know it's going to work for the next 5 years....hopefully that'll be the case. From what I can find I have to send it to NY as they're the only ones that service scanners in the U.S.

Guess we'll see how it goes, thanks for the help/advice.

One more question, I just got an email back from Nikon saying to send in the scanner and to please include a copy of the receipt. I bought the scanner used here on the forum and am wondering if this is going to become an issue with Nikon or if it's just something to find out whether or not the scanner is under warranty, anybody know?

I've sent an email off to the forum member to inquire as to whether or not they might have it but seriously doubt they held on to it...

Thanks.
