Nikon D-600 sensor spots

FYI..

I sent my D-600 to Nikon Canada because of spots on the sensor that were difficult to remove. They decided to replace the shutter assembly so the problem does not re-occur. I had heard that they do this before, so now I know for certain. My D-600 was one of the first ones available in Vancouver, so I think they fixed the shutter oil problem since then.

Hmm. Mine has become spotty, but is not uncleanable. But I do not really want to keep on cleaning it.

Interesting...as noted other places on RFF, I returned two D600s for this problem and bought a Canon 6D. The fact that Nikon replaced the shutter in your camera might mean that current D600s won't ship with the problem. I hope so; it's a great camera but I just gave up on it. Too many issues for a $2K product. Especially one not called "Leica." 🙂

Well, while I wait for my D-600 to be returned I have my M4-P and Zeizz lenses to use with some beautiful film. The D-600 is primarily for telephoto shots etc.

You are right Nikon has no excuse for such shoddy QC.

There may be dust on the sensor out of the box, but the problem has to do with defective shutters spitting tiny oil droplets on the sensor. These artifacts could look like dust at certain apertures. Of course oil collects dust and when the oil evaporates you have dust/crud spot that's difficult to clean. Nikon is replacing the shutter for people who send their D600s in for cleaning under warranty.

I owned a D300 that rarely spit oil onto the it's sensor. I did not have the compound oil/dust issue because I rarely changed the lens, the camera is well sealed, and I didn't work in dusty environments.

I have a D200 and never seem to have a problem with that ether, I just got a D2X
as well and there's spots on the sensor, but will clean them off with a sensor swap
when I get to the city and pick them up.

I just returned to Nikon after 8 years with Canon 1 series digital. Canon had its problems too even with $8k bodies. My 1D body was the only Canon that I owned that didn't have to go back for some sort of issue. Even my 200mm f1.8 had to go back.

If you're into digital you better get used to dust and oh spots. They're simply a part of digital photography.

Dust in itself is not an issue. But when there are spots appearing on the sensor that can't be cleaned off with 1: Rocket Blower 2: Sensor cleaning brush 3: Visable Dust sensor swab, then there is a problem with the camera. Hopefuly, replacing the shutter will resolve this problem and these kind of spots won't happen again. Normal dost on the sensor can easily be cleaned off and is not an issue for me. However, those mentioned above are. A bit dissappointing, and it is a very good DSLR otherwise. Waiting to get it back and try my "new to me" AF-D 80-200 f2.8 with 1.4x teleconverter. OK eagles, be patient, I will be out there to photograph you soon.
