I completely agree 110%. The 5d is still on top for image quality and absolutely the best value camera value for money at the moment. It has higher resolution and the canon L primes are in my opinion the best autofocus primes around. Still people on this forum seem to bag out canons... I don't know.

Good for Nikon, they finally jump on the CMOS and full frame bandwagon.

Well, you are asking the rangefinder crowd. An overall conservative bunch who like build quality, old lenses on new bodies, reliability, weather proofed performance and low light capabilities.

I don't think it is surprising at all that the D700 is the current favorite...

hmmm... the same reasons why i wonder the d700 is the current flavor... lets break it down.
Built quality: about par i would say, with both having a magnesium cast body

old lenses on new bodies: well, more old lenses can be used on the canon than on the nikon. In fact, old AI'd lenses aside, almost nothing else can be adapted onto the nikon. Surely the canon wins here.

reliability: again, probably on par, although if the latest wildlife photographer of the year contest entrants are to be believed, the consumer level canons can probably go to hell and back.

weather proof performance: I've taken almost all my canon out in all sorts of weather from monsoon rain to sand dunes (i do a lot of wildlife and nature) and its out survived some of the pro nikons i've seen/used. The canon is definitely no slouch and the d700 is as yet unproven.

Low light: I have to concede that nikon has this trumped. But the 5D ain't a slouch at up to 1600 which is the limit of what the m8 or most consumer films will do.

Overall, i'm arguing for a more balanced opinion of the canons. Certainly as good as the nikons. ymmv.
