If you try to mount a non-AI lens on the D700 you will crush the little aperture tab on the lens mount. On the older film cameras you could flip this tab out of the way, but on the D700 it is fixed.
The humble FM and FE have this feature as well, the FM2 and FE2 do not.

This is very good advice.
I learned the hard way on a FM2, assuming it would be the same as a FM in regards to lens mounting :bang:

i dunno why everyone here seems to diss a canon cameras. In terms of technology, its current line is definitely more than useable and all the d700 has done is replicate what the 5D did about 3yrs ago with a bit more ISO range to boost. I'd hope that 3yrs extra R/D would at least show in some way. Otherwise, i think both lines are equally good. The bright side is that with the appropriate adaptors (which are by no means always cheap) u can use almost any old lens (except the FD line funnily enough) on the canon body and this includes those marvelous AI'd and pre-Ai lenses as well as all our "beloved" zeiss and leicas. That makes the canon at least that little bit more useful in my books. And the current canon EF primes are no slouch either!
I completely agree 110%. The 5d is still on top for image quality and absolutely the best value camera value for money at the moment. It has higher resolution and the canon L primes are in my opinion the best autofocus primes around. Still people on this forum seem to bag out canons... I don't know.

Good for Nikon, they finally jump on the CMOS and full frame bandwagon.

Because Leica has yet to make a camera that's the equal of the 5D, maybe?

Well, you are asking the rangefinder crowd. An overall conservative bunch who like build quality, old lenses on new bodies, reliability, weather proofed performance and low light capabilities.
I don't think it is surprising at all that the D700 is the current favorite...

hmmm... the same reasons why i wonder the d700 is the current flavor... lets break it down.Well, you are asking the rangefinder crowd. An overall conservative bunch who like build quality, old lenses on new bodies, reliability, weather proofed performance and low light capabilities.

Built quality: about par i would say, with both having a magnesium cast body
old lenses on new bodies: well, more old lenses can be used on the canon than on the nikon. In fact, old AI'd lenses aside, almost nothing else can be adapted onto the nikon. Surely the canon wins here.
reliability: again, probably on par, although if the latest wildlife photographer of the year contest entrants are to be believed, the consumer level canons can probably go to hell and back.
weather proof performance: I've taken almost all my canon out in all sorts of weather from monsoon rain to sand dunes (i do a lot of wildlife and nature) and its out survived some of the pro nikons i've seen/used. The canon is definitely no slouch and the d700 is as yet unproven.
Low light: I have to concede that nikon has this trumped. But the 5D ain't a slouch at up to 1600 which is the limit of what the m8 or most consumer films will do.
Overall, i'm arguing for a more balanced opinion of the canons. Certainly as good as the nikons. ymmv.
