A couple days ago my D700 would no longer automatically focus near or far.
I tried other AF Nikkors and no luck. I could go to the AIS lenses but what's the use?
Anyone have any suggestions or should I send it to a tech?

So you're saying AF worked properly at medium ranges?

Which lens? Some lenses like the 70-200 f2.8 VRII have a focus range limiting switch. Do other lenses work properly? Have you tried that lens on another body?

The AF switch is in correct position. The AF doesn't work at all, near, far. nor medium range. The lens I usually have on it is the Nikon 24-85 and I tried several AF's and none worked! Thanks for all your input.

Did you try cleaning the lens contacts (metal contact points at 12 o'clock position just inside the mount) on the body?

Thanks to all for your help. The D700 is working fine now. I went through each item in the
menu and found that the command for auto AF was OFF! As soon as I pushed ON it worked.
I am so excited. Thanks again to all. My D 700 thanks you too.

Glad it was such a simple fix, and that you were able to get it working properly. Sometimes, it is something we normally wouldn't think could cause a problem. In your case it was well worth the effort to go through each item in the menu to locate the problem.

Menus within menus within menus. I like Nikon DSLRs but ........ :D

Glad you sorted it Tony. :)

The last time my camera wouldn't fire was because I had left it in Self-Timer Mode...
Glad you sorted out the problem...
