I've been looking at the D7000 for about a week now, reading a lot about it, and it's very tempting... But I can't decide if I should sell my D90 and go for it. I am definitely a film guy and it would probably only be used about once a month, but it sounds amazing! (and new toys are always fun) Give me your thoughts, please! Should I go for it?

I was in exactly the same spot about a month ago and I did go for it! I sold a D70 body, my D90 body and two OM1 bodies with three lenses and bought the D7000 with the proceeds.

I love you camera, coming from the D90, you will feel completely at home. To me, it feels somewhat in between the D90 and the D300 in terms of heft. Used it only 2 or 3 times so far but I love the camera.

Good luck with the decision

Awesome! Part of my hesitation was from it being a new camera to me.. but If you say I would feel at home after using the D90.. I'm so easily convinced buying a new camera is a good idea.. haha

Spend away that cash you are planning to part for the D7000 on a variety of film and developers. Cure for GAS?

you'll use it once a month to do something your D90 can't? Will you get more for your D90 than the D7000 costs? If not I wouldn't bother but I always feel a bit nauseous when the next best DSLR comes to the market. Buy more film.

I agree, if you're a film guy and the D7000 won't see too much action, then invest in more film & chemicals. The 7000 is sweet but it's not that much better than the D90 to take the financial hit. I sold my D90 here for $500 which I thought was a very fair price (and the buyer agreed) Even if you go for a used 7000, that's a big chunk of money to come up with to make it happen..

Good points all around.. I probably should just stick to my Nikon F and rangefinders..

Do you need the body AF motor and semi-weather sealing? If not, there is the D5100 for a few hundred less with the same sensor.

There are some other limitations though, lesser VF, no live histogram?! but I think the AF motor is the big thing.

I actually prefer the size of the D5100 which is much smaller.

If you're only going to use it 1x/month then it might be best to keep the D90.
Not to tempt you further however... compared to the 90, that 7000 just feels dang great!

Keep the D90. I had a D7000 briefly and I wasn't overwhelmed. Oh, I'm sure I could have gotten to know it better, but it just didn't feel as good in the hand as my old D300, a camera that just felt right from the start. The D7000 felt a little crowded and I think the price point (which is great) meant they cut some corners on the build quality that I really noticed. I guess I'd prefer a solid plastic camera (like the D70 that I still have and love) rather than a not-quite-up-to-par semi-metal body. Anyway, for what you'd gain over the D90, I don't think it's worth it and agree with those above...put your resources behind what you tend to use most, especially if that's where your heart and soul are...

The price.... $1000 for a used D7000 I can do, but not $2500 for a used D700..

that is crazy. i paid $1500 for a used d700 + mbd10 2 years ago. Deal of the century..i know. The guy was liquidating his nikon gear and going canon. I just wish i had more money to get his nikon lenses 🙁 I thought he might have stolen it, but he was a legitimate photographer in florida and we still chat by email from time to time. Just got lucky really.

I hear great things about the d7000, but i think no one can answer that question but you. At the very least, i dont think you'd lose much to resell if you dont like it.

I wish Bing cashback was around, can u imagine get 30% off ebay prices on leica gear?

I love mine. I upgraded from a d200. I like the video quality and the ability to use MF lenses. Image quality difference is not night and day different though, however, they do have a different feel to them. If digital is not your primary though, I would suggest waiting or buying some new glass. Sometime GAS will pass....

Yeah, I like using my older MF lenses on my D90.. I guess I just wanted something new. Now that I really think about it, and hearing these response, I probably should just hold off..
