If they were the same money I'd say the Sony was overpriced. But this now seems shocking. And no, a claim cannot be made for the Sony being a 'pro' body as it is not weather sealed.
I'm predicting that Sony will be slashing the price of the A9. It really needs to be cheaper than the D850.

While I'm certainly no Sony fan, I think these are two pretty different camera systems. I'd love to see side-by-side image comparisons shot with each camera. But the Sony is Mirrorless, has many less native lenses, though with adapters I guess it has lots of adapted options, while the Nikon is DSLR and enters a family with many native lens options. I think it will come down to "What you're looking for in a camera system." as I feel they address different needs.

Leica doesn't need to... they don't compete with these models. They, most of the time, aren't even sold in the same stores.

as good as mirrorless has become, I'll still take an optical viewfinder over an electronic one any day of the week. the d850 looks like an impressive thing.
my dream digital SLR is essentially a digital Nikon F3: 18 MP CCD tuned to give a B&W film grain look, no autofocus, no rear screen, still retains wind lever to cock shutter. i'd shoot that thing so hard.

@bayernfan, I sold my D600 after shooting the A7 for two months. I kept trying to zoom in on the optical viewfinder to nail focus with wide open lenses...
Being able to nail focus with the Canon FD 50mm and 85mm 1.2L lenses by using the zoom function is my main reason to wanna shoot a FF mirrorless.

you certainly make a valid point when it comes to critically focusing non-native lenses. personally, i can't stand using non-native lenses. the application would have to be very specific for me to considering doing it.
when it comes to native A7 lenses, you're not going to zoom in for critical focus. the experience will be much like a DSLR.
given the choice between an A7 variant with native 35mm and a D850 with native 35mm, I'll take the D850 please.

A9 is a lower pixel-count, high-speed machine, more comparable to the D5.

Have you ever used a A7 series camera? DMF probably is its most popular focus mode for slow photography - where turning the focus ring will immediately throw you into manual focus with enlarged focus area.
