Nikon DF

I just watched video #4 Pure Photography #4 and I'd say the guy's obviously focusing the 50/1.8 manually. And there IS a chrome ring around the lens.

The silhouette at the end of the commercial is getting more telling, too...the pentaprism looks great, and classic.

Keeping fingers crossed...

Here's an enhanced still from that #4 video ... still vague but definitely 'very' interesting!

I am now worrying about the hybrid VF. With my D700 I don't have any problems focusing with manual lenses and I do not need any EVF thing to focus manually. I can live without a split image focusing screen too.

So in case the optical VF automatically became an EVF when switching to MF, this would be terrible.

Better waiting for the official release and full specs before selling my mint D700...

Come on David, not always. I agreed with you up a few posts. We've seen this time and time again... a lot of excitement only to be disappointed. Just trying to keep a level head.

Yess -replaced bad D600

Yess -replaced bad D600

Wow, I didn't even know there is a D610 already. 😱

That won't be a bad camera at all (to be under the hood) especially if they equip it with manual dials and controls.

Most importantly it satisfies my first two requirements: full-frame sensor, and a viewfinder.

In the event you are not aware of the "Self Oiling Sensor" Problem with the D600, which just came out a year ago, approx. The D610 is the replacement model with the Shutter Box scaled up to the right size to fill the hole for the box. This eliminatied (sort of) the problem with the flipping shutter spraying oil on the sensor of the D600.

Not much improvement on the D610, although the "improved" shutter is noted by many as an advancement since it stops the oil flow to the mirror.

Another camera world wonder, courtesy of Nikon.:bang:

Interesting indeed!

I'm hoping that the strap lugs are close to the edges of the camera. If it turns out that the darkness hides a big blob of plastic on each end, that would be a nightmare 😱

The viewfinder also looks 'tall' in same way as the OM-D.

Looks like the strap lugs are where you wish they were :

And the top dials aren't huge ! 😉

John...I know...I'm just kidding you. AND...I totally agree.

It seems like whenever there's an interesting new camera, it's somehow f*cked up by something else. It's as if the photographers and engineers get to the final green light for production, and some marketing wonk changes the final version.

I'm trying not to get my expectations up about the Nikon DF (or Df, or whatever) for exactly this reason. Exactly as you said...wouldn't it be great if Nikon didn't stumble this time?

I suspect that, in part, the difficulty is that the photographer and the engineer are just two members of a large committee.

And the elephant is a mouse designed by a committee [or, however that old cliche goes ...]

I find focusing manually with my D700 impossible, and had to sell a quite nice 85mm less because it was so hard.

This is extremely surprising unless you have to remove your glasses or somewhat.

I'm both nearsighted and astigmat and have to keep my glasses on all the time. No problem whatsoever with the D700 and my manual Nikkors, even with the 20mm and 28mm. And focusing with anything over 50mm is a breeze with any camera.

Absolutely no wasted shots because of focus errors with the D700 and the MF primes here, and my friends are on par with me.

Did you try the DK-17M lupe ? Inexpensive and very efficient to make the in-focus area "pop" even more precisely.

Strange.

(...)

Strange.

My Nikkor 35/1.4 AIS was much "sharper" on the NEX than it was on the D700. I would expect the same for the 85/1.4 AIS or the 50/1.4 / 50/1.2. Of course, perfect focus becomes less of a problem stopped down.

I may be just lucky with my peculiar eyesight and the fact that I always keep my glasses on. I don't know. I fairly trust you people telling you have MF problems with the D700.

Katzeye Optics makes a split image screen for the D700. They sell it for $105, which is very likely to be a bit less than the price gap between what a second hand D700 now sells for, and what the new DF will be priced at... 😱 😉
