Nikon DF

i really like the little lcd on the top plate. why don't you see that on any mirrorless cameras?

...but fps would not be what this camera is geared for..no?

Agreed, complaining about FPS for a camera that is designed for contemplative photography is like barking up the wrong tree.

For real, those of us who are not sports photographer, what use do you really have for 11fps anyways? If you answer kids, then you're not trying very hard.

WTH is the point of making a camera that is so clearly geared towards manual photography and then completely dropping the ball by leaving out what may be the most important feature on a camera like that?

I'm nodding in agreement.
For the asking price, there should be the freedom to swap focusing screen. Ironically, Nikon used to be very good at providing this option.

Now this is what a real camera top plate must look like.

Sorry, Highway, yours is still too cluttered.
This is how an elegant camera top plate should look like 😀 :

Accepting the shortcomings and trying to logically rationalize why a company hindered the camera in many ways is so awful.. but not my money so what do I care other than the principle.

I was wrong, I see in one of the pic posted on the Nikon web site, the camera does have an adjustable viewfinder diopter. Still can't see buying one, but glad to see Nikon is including that with the camera.

Best,
-Tim

One thing that Nikon is not talking about, (but I assume is present with the DF, since it uses the Nikon D4 sensor) is the incredible low light performance of that chip. When covering sports, I use ISO 10,000 quite often, and the results are really good.

Even pushing it to 12,800 produces good results. That would make the DF one heck of a good low light camera.

Best,
-Tim

No, this is what a top plate should look like:

I see the camera is up already on B&H Photo's web site. The way it is pictured, with the 1.8 kit lens, the body looks smaller. The whole package reminds me of my first "real" camera, purchased brand new almost forty years ago, a Canon TX with 50mm 1.8 lens. Tugging at the nostalgia strings. Of course that Canon kit was $159, not $2999.

Best,

I have used my AI 105/2.5 and AIS 400/3.5 Nikkors very satisfactorily on both a 5D2 and 5D3. The 5D3 is currently available new. Both have sensors larger than 16mp.

Well the AI or AI-S 105/2.5 and the AI-S 400/3.5 ED are some of the exceptions to the general rule, they can face a sensor larger than 16MP with no problems indeed but few MF Nikkors can do that ; add the 180/2.8 AI-S ED, the 300/4.5 AI-S ED (but not the IF-ED version), the 85/1,4 AI-S, the 50/1.4 AI or AI-S, the 28/2,8 AI-S and you're done... 😉

Great review, he really nails the camera, and why some will like and others won't.

Yes. And I love his comments about the "new" kit lens :

"Does Nikon really think that people buying this camera don't already have a 50mm lens? Let's see, in its current lineup Nikon now has 45mm, 50mm, 50mm, 50mm, 50mm, 50mm, 50mm, 50mm, 55mm, 58mm, 60mm, and 60mm lenses you can use with the Df. 12 different "normal" lenses. A whole heck of "normal" is going on in Japan, apparently. "

Excellent ! 😛

Yes, but you can't compare $159 of 1973's money to $159 in 2013.

problem is it is still going to tough to focus on the non changeable focus screen and the metering is of the stop-down variety. it seems the A7 might be a better way to use such lenses.

I don't know, the electronic rangefinder is what I'll use to focus, so no problem. Interchangeable screens would have been nice, but not a deal-breaker. Remember, this camera is 3 grand, not 5 or 6.

i was expecting the size of the cam to be smaller and less knobs. why does Nikon wants to place so many knobs on the cam? the cam comes with a LCD screen and user can select setting via that. .....

I fully agree. Once again, a great idea for a niche camera, then deciding to be all things to all users. Still not a deal breaker though.
