Nikon DF

the whole controlled leaks and youtube teasers backfired on nikon. people's expectations were raised unrealistically, everyone expected a digital fm2, what they got instead is neither retro nor modern, its a bling camera.

Sony's A7 at half the price is 8mp more with focus peaking and light weight --- nikon is in trouble.

My D700 is still serving me well, but when this camera was being teased, I was intrigued. I don't mind all the knobs; I find them more convenient than delving into the menus. I don't mind that it's larger than Sony's offering. It's the price tag that irks me. I'm willing to pay for the D4 sensor, but not that much. Now, if they'd have thrown in some innovations along with the sensor, it might be a different matter.

Hope this wasn't too whiny.

I have a feeling that when AF sensors started getting very sensitive operating at f8, designing focusing screens might be tad difficult since they mess with the light hitting the AF sensors.

Never mind the metering sensor as well.

Just one question Phantomas : can you confirm that the focusing screen isn't changeable by the camera owner ? Or is it ?

Thanks and congrats ! You did it well by picking the black one. 🙂

The camera seems to contain similar/same screen retaining mechanism as D800 or D600 (or 700). But with your kind understanding I will not be unnecessarily removing the screen right now.

Just a general question, where do the people here get such disposable income that they can afford such expensive gear like the DF and Noct, much less Leica equipment?

Any insider trading secrets, bank robbery tips, or is it mostly government bureaucrats?

International jewel thief, chef and F1 driver. 😀😀😀

I guess it depends on how you've set-up your life and how many responsibilities you take on financially. Many NYC-ers don't own cars, own homes, or have kids. The lack of those things can pay for a Leica quickly.

Some things involve no monetary exchange. But it does seem to cause bitterness. I apologise for any unintentionally hurt feelings.
If you want an advice: work on connections. Looking down at people might not work in that area though.

I'll take the post down. The camera was not bought (it's not even on sale), but based on my privilege to have such items on hand I thought I'd share practicalities. Bitchfest was somewhat expected, but in the hindsight would rather be avoided.
Have a good night.

You've got the understanding. 😉

Well on the D700 it's quite easy to replace the screen straightforward. Seems that this is a bit more complicated on the D800/600. The screens retaining wires aren't the same. For instance at this point Katzeye Optics don't make any screen for the D800/600 while they make one for the D700.

Time will tell all those details.

Thanks a lot for sharing and having taken some time for look at the screen retaining design. I wish you had a lot of fun with the Df. It will be interesting to discover how the new "Noct-Nikkor" will perform too. Not really a small lens, by all means.

This is a very interesting discussion about a very intriguing product,

The camera it's too expensive for me (I'll stick to my 100 Euros FE which does the same thing practically 🙂) but it's a "niche" product really and targeted to the M8/M9 kind of crowd: if people are willing to pay 7,000 for a Leica why not 3,000 for a Nikon? Don't forget that digital cameras are for a lot of people a real pain to use + plain ugly + overwhelmingly bulky (sorry folks), so this is an answer to that. Net, it will boil-down to how well it is built (and I predict a "Hermes" version soon, Ha!).
