Nikon, Epson

OK: here's one scanned by a friend for me on a coolscan 5000 (.tif, originally; 4000 dpi):

Here's one from my V500 (jpg, originally; 4800 dpi):

The resolution is really similar (why I didn't bother with larger examples). But the color -- and I'm not sure I have the language to put this correctly -- is richer and warmer from the Nikon. I haven't tried making any color adjustments with the Epson (I've only had it for a few weeks).

Is this the best I can hope for from the Epson (I'm not displeased with it otherwise)? Or are there settings I can tweak?

No two scanners will give the same color in the raw scan, and no matter what scanner you have you'll need to do some adjustments to the scans after you make them. Can you do curves adjustments in Photoshop to match the Epson to the Nikon? If so, I think you're ok.

Looks like the V500 scan has much lower contrast. Notice how in the left the Nikon scan has much deeper blacks while the Epson version it's closer to neutral. Might want to play with levels to set a black point you like, and curves in to boost the contrast. Both in PS.

I'm curious - did you have the "Backlight adjustment" option in Epson Scan enabled?

I'm pretty sure I didn't have "backlight" checked -- but some stuff gets checked by default in that interface. I'll play with the scanner settings, too . . .
