NIKON F jammed shutter

Hi folks,

I just acquired a nice looking early F but it shows a jammed shutter. The shutter looks like it's fully cocked but it's actuation is not possible. The mirror can be flipped up and down by hand.
Any clue on where to start for a homemade fix ? :angel:

Try releasing the shutter with the self timer.. I have a Nikon F that once in a while also locks itself and this usually works for that. Otherwise, try also to activate the mirror lock up. Also, try to put the ring around the shutter button to R and A. Fiddle around a bit.

I have an F2 that sometimes just did not fire. Self timer method worked, but it was annoying that every now and then it just did not fire. I also needed to push the shutter button very deep before it fired when it worked.

I took it to a local camera repair shop and the the repair guy told me it's a simple tuning job (needs to be tuned to release the shutter earlier on the buttons travel). I let him fix it and it now works fine (it has not done it since and I've shot dozens of rolls with it).

I don't know about a diy fix though.

hmmm. First take the inner bottom off and see if pulling on a spring can release it. The shutter release also moves a shaft on the bottom (same that the motor would do).

Other than that, you have to take the top right cover off and see what's up.

Thank you guys. I will look at the simple tests you advised and I will post the results. It may not happen before 2 weeks because I am traveling right now and I do not have access to my tools.

If the mirror lifting spring is broken, the mirror will not trip the curtians. I would pull the bottom plate and go from there. The F and F2 bodies are totally different,Most SLRs if dropped when "cocked" will lose mirror tension, thusly jamming the whole mech, Manually recocking the mirror will work ..Common on Spotmatics , K1000's and all H series Pentax's

My first F I nearly broke while trying to repair a jam. Then I got some manuals and good tools, and nowadays I can service them and keep them going forever. Manuals are in different places online, or on CD from the auction site. It is really a great help to read a lot before opening up an F. They are quite easy to work on after one gets what parts are connecting to what, and how it is supposed to be aligned.
