Nikon F3 Tribute

I will keep looking, though I won't be looking at KEH, that's where the F3T came from.

So I think I'll stick with B&H from now on.

Also consider Adorama. That's where I got a LN F3HP for $150.00. Understand that both Adorama and B&H have a good return policy, but their grading scale can be very uneven. Because I live in NYC I benefit from being able to see and try any camera or lens in person, where I can benefit from grading and pricing errors. KEH is generally the best for grading accuracy.

F3P's should be considered. The lack of double exposure, the robust weathersealing, the oversized controls, the easier to use shutter lock, and the lack of a second safety on the rear door release make the F3P a better camera for me. I find that for me the F3P is a much more elegant camera to use than a standard F3HP. The lack of the secondary rear door safety lock makes loading a F3P faster and easier. The oversized controls are easier to use with gloves and in the cold.

In a way a F3P is a F3HP on steroids.

Saw an F3T with MD4 at Camera Co-op in Houston, TX yesterday when I was in. Do not remember the price offhand, but they check things out pretty well before they sell them.

I really miss not being able to walk into B&H whenever I need something. Lived in NYC from '92 - '96 and spent one or two Sunday mornings a month at B&H, back when they were on 17th street (I think it was).

They've always treated me extremely well, and have taken back numerous items that I felt were graded inappropriately over the twenty some years I've been doing business with them.

Here in Chi-Town we have no more real photo stores. Helix went belly up a year or so ago, and within the last year Calumet disappeared as well. Those were our last two. Like living in a wasteland.

Have you been to the new B&H yet? Anyways its an interesting store that I say is a tourist attraction because of the way it is run. Service is exceptional and I bounce between B&H and Adorama a lot. The guys in the used department at B&H are good friends, and it seems on a few occasions there have been spontainious NYC Meet-Ups happening at the used counters. My friends just tell me to step aside so they can help other customers while I have a meeting.

I've also been compared to the urban legend Luis Mendez because I'm so widely known, because I get seen all over the city, and because I stand out. Luis invites me every year to go to New Orleans with him, but while Luis has his spot outside B&H, I kid around by saying my haunt is the used department INSIDE B&H. LOL.

I kinda get VIP treatment at Adorama which annoys some of my friends. It seems I get more than my fair share of attention and get shown all the good stuff that just came in and other preferential treatment; meanwhile the friends I am with get ignored. LOL.

So you know Isaac at B&H? Right before I left the city in '96, I sold Isaac almost my complete Canon FD inventory. I've always really liked him. And have always enjoyed doing business with B&H.

Have not been to the new store yet. It was even a tourist attraction when they were down on 17th. People from all over the country had been doing mail order business with them, and whenever they got to the city, they'd make the pilgrimage. Great store, great group of folks.

Never was much for Adorama. Are they still at the old location, or have they moved uptown as well?

Adorama has a very different vibe, and I have friends there also. Sadly it seems much of the inventory now is slimmer than before. A few years ago there was a real glut of Nikon F3's and they were being dumped for no money. It seemed film abandonment was occuring in a big way, and many converted to digital.

Anyways I really capitolized on the great deals and the selection. Glad I did because now pickings are slimmer. I use Adorama and B&H as an economic indicator. I can use my friends in the used departments as focus groups to really find out what is going on in the world economy by the level of tourist traffic, inventory build-ups and declines, and by guaging the market on used gear. I find that this insider info is more accurate than any analyst or any money manager.

Right now at B&H they're listing the most F3's in a while, and probably will be for a short time as they are getting a bunch of old SLR gear in due to that Sony A7 promo where you trade in your old gear for a discount on an A7.

I was in NYC with my wife a few months ago for a short holiday, our hotel was not far from B&H which of course we visited not sure if two or three time. Excellent! Competent nice people.
Anything strange? Yes, my wife spent there more money than myself 🙂

Even though I now live in sin with another woman, I did a very smart thing and bought her a big-big diamond ring. This big gift is kinda like a "get outa jail free card" that never expires.

"Maggie" is also very low maintenance.

This just arrived, from B&H. Same price as the F3T with the broken shutter and badly worn body. No complaints.

LCD is plenty contrasty, thing is pristine, and the shutter functions. Has had film through it, but not much.

Hey, I got one for all you F3 tributors, anyone else got an F3 that has blue numbers on the frame counter? Just noticed this on the F3HP I just got from B&H. The frame counter numbers aren't silver or chrome or white, they're blue. Freaky.

Picture doesn't show it as it appears in person, but compare the numbers to the top of the shutter button or the strap lugs. They're blue. Anyone else have this on their F3?

Tim, I never really noticed before, but mine has blue numbers too. 🙂 Mine is a F3HP, serial #180XXXX range.
