I think I already know the answer to this - is there a program shift function on the Nikon F4 ?
It's not mentioned in the manual so I guess no - but just wanted to check in case I've missed anything obvious...

Nope, there isn't. It offers two different Program modes but nothing past that.

I thought the program shift was in the FA and the F4 using AiS, AF, AFd lenses longer than 135mm.

You can select Program High which sacrifices depth of field for faster shutter speed. It was designed for longer lenses, but it's my preferred mode most of the time on my F801 and now F4 regardless of focal length.
Shame the F4 doesn't have program shift, but at least it's less of a faff to put into aperture priority than my F801.
