Nikon FA or FE2??

I personally went with the FE--I've got a pair of them in lovely shape, one black and one chrome--for several reasons over the FE2. One is that they're cheaper: both of mine are in close to mint condition, and I got one for about $140 (the black one) and the other for $72.

Love him or loathe him, Ken Rockwell also likes the FE over the FE2, and I found his reasoning meshed with mine:

I don't really miss the TTL capability of the FE2. When I do use a flash, I simply set it in A mode since I normally attach it to a remote cord anyway--I almost never shoot with the flash on-camera.

I've just picked up one of the K3 screens for the FM3a which I'm going to try out in one of my FEs to see if it really is an improvement. And whatever you choose, the FM/FE/FA series all go very nicely with a Gordy wrist strap--great for street shooting!

I have at one time or another owned and used FA, FE, and FM, as well a F3HP. I lost a couple and then sold the rest years ago, and when I was looking to return to 35mm film, I bought an F90X/N90S. Of the manual focus cameras, I preferred the FE for build, but liked the FA for its metering more, especially since I used Velvia 50 back then. If I had to do it over, I would pick the FA, but am delighted to have the N90S now, which is a better camera in almost every way. I use mostly manual focus AI lenses with it.

Although the FE2 is fantastic, there are two matters that consistently irk me.

• The AE lock is a lever on the front of the camera. I'm used to locking exposure with a half-press of the shutter button. The lever is very awkward to use.

On a related note, it should probably be mentioned that for some reason the FA doesn't have an AE lock, which surprises me.

Other than that, I have no complaints about my FA. For years, it was my reliable backup to my FM2 and later my N90S, and just a couple years ago I treated it to a brand-new MD15 motor drive (B&H still had them in stock! Heck they might still have some even now). No electronic issues and no trouble with the LCD display. I did notice battery life was much shorter than that of the FM2, although with the MD15 that is not an issue.

So, AE lock can be done with a 1/2 press on the shutter button? That is awkward IMO also...

It does have mulit-Exposer... I have never used this on any camera I have owned that had it.... better if that lever was an AE lock... perfect place to have it, Huh? Like on the Contax G1/G2... right next to the shutter button....
