Just picked up another FE - in black and its having some problems.

The red battery light shows that there is power yet when set to any shutter speed the camera acts like there is no batteries.

Locks up and open

Any advice before I start taking it apart?

Locks up and open
I vaguely seem to remember that there was a known issue with the FE which would result in a lock up with the mirror up, and could be temporarily amended by 'flicking' the mirror downwards to release the lock up. I cannot remember the cause but think that it wasn't too much of a problem to get sorted. It might well be worth googling as I am sure that there will be more info out there somewhere - or talk to a repairer used to dealing with film Nikons.

also the metering is enganged by pulling the advance lever out .. in my case the actual switch under the lever stuck in "on" position causing the battery to drain in a week. Maybe yours is stuck in off position? a tiny bit of lubrication helped.

I had it working yesterday when I have some screws out. But as soon As I put them back in it reverted to a 30th on every speed and then continued like there were no batteries. I am a little confused.

Just to make sure: did you advance until picture number one on the counter ?
I think the lightmeter does not work until number one is on.

I forgot to mention it's not the lack of power keeping it up. Cause as soon as I turn it off (put the advance lever back in) The mirror and shutter close.

The metering works so I doubt this is the problem.

The front ring that moves with the apature is sticky. Yesterday I had it clear and moving fine - and the shutter worked as well - but now it is sticky again and the shutter is sticky again. All i did was put the screws back in!
