Spring must finally be here. We saw our first robins two days ago!
Nikon Historians, here’s an update on the Convention in Philadelphia.
NHS Con-15 will be Saturday, October 1, 2016. It will be at the Penn’s View Hotel, located in the Historic District. Incidentally, our meeting will precede the Leica meeting scheduled for the following week, so those wishing to attend both can easily do so.
The convention fee will be $200, a bargain compared to previous meetings. This year, the fee covers the entire meeting day, including the evening banquet. Morning and afternoon coffee breaks, Lunch and the Dinner! Recall Con-14 in San Francisco, the cost was $175 but did NOT include the dinner.
Penn’s View Hotel information for making room reservations is in attachment (pp2). Make your arrangements now. There is no penalty for cancellation by 3pm the day before you plan to arrive. Be sure to make them with Toni Montano, directly, to insure the convention rate.
Getting to the Penn’s View by car, train or plane. We hope the attached instructions are clear, but when you live here, you can sometime overlook a thing or two.
The Photorama Camera Show is scheduled for the following day, October 2, 2016. It will be held at the Fort Washington Hilton. Attached are show details and instructions for getting there by car or public transportation. The Society will have table space if you’re interested in selling a few items.
Pre and Post Convention activity: We hope the three days we’ve planned before the meeting will leave you with some history and a good feeling for the City of Brotherly Love. Wes has outlined a walking tour of the Historic District on Wednesday which will include a chance for lunch at the oldest tavern in America. Thursday we will arrange Big Bus tickets for an on-off city tour. A suggested itinerary to capture Philly’s most interesting will be on its way later. Friday we’ll take in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which can take most of the day. We’ve also been asked to suggest an alternative for those who just might want to leave the museum after a ‘Rocky photo op’ on the front stairs.
Following the Sunday show, there are two days of touring planned outside the city. Monday, an all-day bus trip thorough Amish country. We will be picked up at the hotel at 8am. During the tour, our guide will describe the Amish and Mennonite way of life in this special part of Pennsylvania. We’ll stop at an Amish farm, a bakery and have a meal in a typical Amish setting. More sights after lunch before returning at about 7pm. The cost will be about $150 per person.
On Tuesday, an excursion to Hawk Mountain to see (and possibly photograph) the fall migration is scheduled. October is a beautiful time of year to get back to nature. The physical activity will be somewhat more than walking Philadelphia, so good shoes and good legs are suggested. We will end up later that afternoon with a visit to Wes and Linda Loder’s home, a passive solar house, ‘off-the-grid’, and a BBQ dinner.
