The date is set folks, the 15th convention will be in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Date is set for October 1st 2016
This is a week prior to Leica Historical Society's Convention, the hard core can attend both!

Here’s an update on the Convention planning for Philadelphia.

NHS Con-15 will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016, beginning at 9:00. It will be at the Penn’s View Hotel located in the historic district. Incidentally, our meeting will precede the Leica meeting scheduled for the following week, so those wishing to attend both can easily do so.

Attached is information on the hotel and instruction for making your room reservations.

The Photorama Camera Show is scheduled for the following day, October 2, 2016. It will be held at the Ft. Washington Hilton. The Hilton is a short walk from the Ft. Washington train station which is about a 30 minute ride from downtown Philly. Incidentally, 65 and older can ride the train for $1.00. You’ll be receiving additional details regarding table costs, early-bird entry, etc. when I receive that from the show organizer, Abe Vinegar.

Pre and Post Convention activity: Before the meeting, three days of Philadelphia activities, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday, the Historic District Tour including Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, and lunch at the City Tavern. The Mint and/or the Betsy Ross House if there’s still energy left. Thursday and Friday we’ll show you the best of the city.

Following the meeting and camera show, we’re planning two days of touring outside the city. A trip thorough Amish country. A covered wagon tour including a typical Pennsylvania Dutch community lunch, and a visit to an Amish carpenter’s shop to see how a ‘nail-free’ building comes together. The second day will offer an excursion to Hawk Mountain to see and (possibly) photograph the fall migration. Later that afternoon, a visit to Wes and Linda Loder’s home, a passive solar house, ‘off-the-grid’, and a BBQ dinner.

Including Pre and Post activities: Wednesday, September 28 through Tuesday, October 4, 2016.

how many tables ? buying/selling or just looking ?

Is this only open to members? (Those who have paid dues to join NHS?)

For me, it would be a really fun trip, but I have no interest in signing up for the NHS at 40$ a year, or any interest in the beautiful publications I'm sure these dues pay for.

Not knowing the area, is there other affordable lodging near by?

I organized the last Convention in San Francisco. Here is the typical plan: a one day meeting of interesting presentations, with coffee and lunch breaks. Optional, but fun, group dinner afterwards. Swap meet: after the presentations, before the dinner, informal, put your wares on your table early and have them out to show/sell. Sight seeing/photo op events typically a few days before the meeting. Always try to time the meeting with a camera show that weekend, and that will happen again this year.
 
Photorama is a great show to have in town the following day!

I always enjoy chatting with the Vinegars! (RIP Sam!) and Igor if he's there.

That's the short version, this is the long one.

Convention day is a full day ordeal, there are speakers offering presentations, some of historical value, during the last convention there were items presented that were never seen before!

Wes Loder was a huge contributor last time, he is a researcher and historian, he had two separate topics, Uli Koch is another regular contributor, he is the reflex expert, both members mentioned here have books written in their respective fields, most authoritative sources. Wes and Uli are automatic speakers, they don't miss conventions!

There are activities before the actual convention, like shore excursions on a cruise ship, sightseeing tours of the city, muesums and other interesting photo-ops.
Tours are planned accordingly for a whole week, optional of course, but the camera show is always part of it, this time it's planned like the last time, after the convention, members and attendees of the convention enjoy their own tables at the show, we can sell as well as buy. There is an admission price, Convention fees are around $150-$200 and camera show admission is under $10

There is a fare-well dinner planned after the convention, it's also optional but recommended, Bob distributes gifts!

This time around in Philly, Wes is offering a bird photo-op and BBQ afterwards, advising long tele-photo opportunity, I have been teasing him to use my 35cm Nikkor for over a decade, it's a done deal now, I also will make him compare my 500mm Ais-P f4 against his 50cm f5 short RF mount Nikkor-T, lets see if Nippon Kogaku got better after being Nikon for 30 years!

Since the head-bartender has not indicated his attendance, I will hint a special topic, this will be presented by your's truly:

The most attended convention had 80 members, most conventions get around 50, members bring items but not much trading happens in the convention, it more show and tell.
9am to 5pm saturday convention.

The Sunday camera show does offer 100+ tables.

Spring must finally be here. We saw our first robins two days ago!
Nikon Historians, here’s an update on the Convention in Philadelphia.



NHS Con-15 will be Saturday, October 1, 2016. It will be at the Penn’s View Hotel, located in the Historic District. Incidentally, our meeting will precede the Leica meeting scheduled for the following week, so those wishing to attend both can easily do so.



The convention fee will be $200, a bargain compared to previous meetings. This year, the fee covers the entire meeting day, including the evening banquet. Morning and afternoon coffee breaks, Lunch and the Dinner! Recall Con-14 in San Francisco, the cost was $175 but did NOT include the dinner.



Penn’s View Hotel information for making room reservations is in attachment (pp2). Make your arrangements now. There is no penalty for cancellation by 3pm the day before you plan to arrive. Be sure to make them with Toni Montano, directly, to insure the convention rate.



Getting to the Penn’s View by car, train or plane. We hope the attached instructions are clear, but when you live here, you can sometime overlook a thing or two.



The Photorama Camera Show is scheduled for the following day, October 2, 2016. It will be held at the Fort Washington Hilton. Attached are show details and instructions for getting there by car or public transportation. The Society will have table space if you’re interested in selling a few items.



Pre and Post Convention activity: We hope the three days we’ve planned before the meeting will leave you with some history and a good feeling for the City of Brotherly Love. Wes has outlined a walking tour of the Historic District on Wednesday which will include a chance for lunch at the oldest tavern in America. Thursday we will arrange Big Bus tickets for an on-off city tour. A suggested itinerary to capture Philly’s most interesting will be on its way later. Friday we’ll take in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which can take most of the day. We’ve also been asked to suggest an alternative for those who just might want to leave the museum after a ‘Rocky photo op’ on the front stairs.



Following the Sunday show, there are two days of touring planned outside the city. Monday, an all-day bus trip thorough Amish country. We will be picked up at the hotel at 8am. During the tour, our guide will describe the Amish and Mennonite way of life in this special part of Pennsylvania. We’ll stop at an Amish farm, a bakery and have a meal in a typical Amish setting. More sights after lunch before returning at about 7pm. The cost will be about $150 per person.



On Tuesday, an excursion to Hawk Mountain to see (and possibly photograph) the fall migration is scheduled. October is a beautiful time of year to get back to nature. The physical activity will be somewhat more than walking Philadelphia, so good shoes and good legs are suggested. We will end up later that afternoon with a visit to Wes and Linda Loder’s home, a passive solar house, ‘off-the-grid’, and a BBQ dinner.

Nikon Historians,
The planning for your meeting in Philadelphia is now moving at warped speed.

NHS Con-15, October 1st, and the days surrounding it should prove an enjoyable and surprising time in the City of Brotherly Love. The first of the surprises you probably know of, by now. We are all excited to have Mr. Tetsuro Goto, Nikon Fellow, join us and have him speak at our convention.

The program for Saturday’s meeting includes presentations by Goto-san, Kiu Kaffi, Mike Symons, Wes Loder, Terry Ravassod, Chris Sap, Bill Kraus and possibly others. Topics will include a look back at Nippon Kogaku’s epoch making facility in Tokyo, a tour of two new Nikon Museums, information about some unique products and applications, and a bit of history on the doings of NHS leading up to Con-15. Following the meeting, there will be a swap meet “trade show” in the room. And, don’t forget something to bring something for “show and tell”.

For those who have been watching the TV series, “Legends and Lies - The Patriots”, you’re getting a good introduction to our walking tour of Historic Philadelphia, scheduled for Wednesday, the 28th.

The historic area is yours to enjoy.



As mentioned earlier, the Penn’s View has been spit-shined and is ready for us. Toni has been quite helpful with the meeting venue and reservations. There are still a couple of rooms left, but the hold will carry only until the end of this month.

Post-meeting Bus trips Monday and Tuesday, October 3rd and 4th.

Monday will be the excursion to Amish country, a journey back in time to the lifestyles of those who have settled in Lancaster County since the time of William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania. After lunch with an Amish family, we will visit the largest private collection of Americana (that we know of).

Tuesday will be an all-day excursion northwest of Philadelphia, starting with a visit to the world-famous Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Then a short ride through ‘hex-signed’ country and a stop at a private car museum. We’ll end the trip at Wes and Linda’s home for a grilled picnic supper before returning.

A minimum of 20 participants is required for these tours, so we will need to know ASAP if you are planning to join one or both of the tours. Payment will be required by August 15th. If we don’t reach the minimum, you will receive a refund.

First day of the Nikon Historical Society's Convention in Philadelphia we meet outside the Penns View Hotel and go to see the Liberty Bell. Weather could be better!

I like the NHS Conventions - have been to many of them. However. they often coincide with the LHSA annual frenzy. This time LHSA meet in Vancouver on the 4-9 of October. It would be a bit tricky to fit both in. Maybe a bit of planning could put them ay least two weeks apart.
