nikon kits?

thinking about a d90/24/85 kit...everyday carry...

what does ya think? maybe throw the 40 micro in there too?

Hm, with the crop sensor that basically is equivalent to a 35-135 combination. That would be missing something in my book, both at the wide end and in the middle. Personally I'd go for something like 28-50-90 or 28-50-135, so in your case roughly a 20, that 40 of yours and the 85.

That sounds like a nice kit. Those lenses are tack sharp. Probably all you'd ever need.

the 40 has the added benefit of macro...though the 50 would be good for people shots.

the 24 is great for walking about, the 85 for keeping a bit of distance (something i'm not used to anymore).

I can comment on the D90, great camera even if your going for big prints! BTW I carry a 28, 35, 50 and 105....never miss a shot.

didn't care for the 28 on the 1.5 crop sensor.
the 35=50 not a favourite either.
love the 24, i think the 85 is gonna be a hoot and the 40 is a favourite focal length on the 1.5 crop plus i'm liking the close up thing.

but i am thinking for everyday when i don't carry the rf kit...so leaving home the 17 for sure...and...?

I've had the Nikon 50/1.4D for years, and highly recommend it. It's about the same size as the 24.

i have a 50/1.8d...seems a fine lens and i think great for portraits...very small too.

I'm curious to see what you think about the 85 because I thought long and hard about getting it. I went with a 105 instead and it is pretty good. I use a 28 for the wide stuff but am considering going to the 24. I absolutely abhor the 50 on my crop camera but I really can't explain why. I also use a 135 every now and then but I think I would just rather ditch it and go for broke like a 300/4.5 or something.

Most days my kit is the 28 and the 105.

the 24 is sharper than the 28...from what i have read/seen.
i thought about the 105 also but the 85 came up first, both are hard to find used and at a reasonable price. i don't mind the 50 but i think the 40 can be a sub for it as well.

I have a Nikon FE with a 24/55-micro/135.(All Nikon Glass). Great film kit!!! 😎

But, for a 2 lens crop kit, maybe a 24 and 55/60 (35/~85)

I've always liked film snaps made with the 24/2.8 but like you were saying I ran into the 28 first. I'll probably be switching for sure as soon as the funding is available. Ultimately I will probably end up at 24, 85, 105...a three lens kit with two bodies...D5000 and F2...hybrid kit! 🙂

I find myself using my 20/2.8 (30mm equivalent, and a really sharp lens on that format) a lot on my D300 as the normal carry-around lens, and a 55 or 60 micro virtually 100% of the time in the studio, with the 28/2.8 AF-D as a alternate carry-around lens. At 42mm equivalent, the 28 angle of view would qualify as normal for any other format but for Leica having trained us otherwise. The 28 is quite a good lens, even at 2.8, unlike the AF (no D) version, so I hear. I have an 85/1.8, but never use it at all--it's too long for me for almost everything I do, but the micros or a 50 make nice short teles, when I need one. As JSU says, I like the quality of my 105/2.5 AI better than the 85, anyway. Do they make that in AF? I don't know.

Your 24/85 kit idea sounds, to me, both a bit long and a bit spread. 24/50 (1.4, not 1.8!), maybe, but I prefer a slightly wider set, myself.

I'm not a fan of short macros--at close range, some distance is a good thing.

The 24/2.8, though now long in the tooth, is still an exceptional lens.

I've used every 85 mm Nikon SLR lens made, none really bad, none impress me as much as the 105/2.5 P-C (ai'd) I still have.

For something in between I would choose a 55/2.8 Micro Nikkor or the exceptional CV Ultron 40/2 with its "P" chip.

With the Nikon crop sensor the 24/2.8 would be, and has been, my "go to" normal lens.

I have the 55mm f/3.5 Micro Nikkor, The last Non-Ai version Model (by S#) that has been Ai'd before I got it.. It is a very sharp lens by any modern standard.
