Nikon N80... do you have one?

Not a bad move BUT... take a look.....

Not a bad move BUT... take a look.....

Gasp!!

A discussion on not just an SLR, but a cheapo, bottom feeder. What in the world?

Well, film is back!! At least here in the Leica Cave.

About 15 years ago, I really wanted a new N80. Never bought one because I had a perfectly good AF Nikon. It was unaffordable then but also, it seemed over the top owning two cameras that did the same thing. Materialism and lust must have been forbidden back then. I wish it were the same now!:D

At any rate, I was thinking about finding a mint N80 for those softball, baseball, football games when I want a decent AF rig that I didn't have to worry too much about it in dirty, rainy conditions.

Anyone have any ideas about the sanity of this?:D

The preceding camera in Nikon N series that reached a pro level status and is still reasonably priced... reliable....etc.

DON'T make a final decision without looking at the N8008S....

You may be surprised at what you can get in a reasonably priced pro level film Nikon.

There is a cheap plastic fantastic 28-80 that will work great with the F80.

Presume you are talking about the Gelded Cheap!!! Plastic marvel that Ken Rockwell raves about...

I've bought a number of them from $20 to $50. They came kitted to the N series 55-90 model camera's.

Here's what Ken has to say:

Did I say cheap!? and one of the sharpest, lightest small zooms I have ever used.

Don't pass if you have a chance to put one of these on any Nikon mount AF camera. I used them on a number of Fujifilm S2 through S5 Pro camera's.

More good news ... They flood the used market and readily available in huge numbers.

I read a few places that an application of Armorall will help protect it after cleaning.

I just applied Mequirs Ultimate Black to my N-80; two coats. And it is not sticky, it is fine. I know that I will have to put added coats later but for now, it is great. I don't know if I spelled Mequirs correctly.

I don't want this camera, it was my daughters. She is a skin Doctor, and used it for skin pathologies. The lenses turned out to be a 105mm Sigma Macro. It is a nice lens but not really something I would use.

It's spelled with a g, not a q, John.

The way to do the treatment that worked on my F100 and N90s, is to clean the coverings with isopropyl alcohol of 91% (not the rubbing alcohol which is only about 50%, and has additives). Then apply a liberal amount of Armorall Original Formula to it (really liberal), and let it sit for at least a week. It's also best to take the door off the camera. On the N80, you also have to consider doing this to the front and side grips on both sides of the camera body. I learned this technique from John Early.

On my N90s, I didn't get the door clean enough at first, so I made another pass with the alcohol, and it started taking off the covering, which is pretty thin compared to the molded versions on the N80 and F100. So I just completely removed the covering on the door, but placed a piece of clear tape over the little icons so they wouldn't rub off.

Kuzano lauded the N8008s, and I agree.

The N-8008 and its Euro counterpart the 'F-801', are truely pro-grade cameras and surprisingly overlooked by most buyers.

Have the pleasure of still owning both. They were my go-to cameras on the job before digital became mandatory.

F801, and F801x for the N8008s version. The s version has the upgraded AF which is quicker than the original.

I found what appears to be a clean one yesterday - we'll see how I like it when it gets here!

Thanks for the tip, if the Maguiers leave too quickly, I'll try Armorall. Someone wanted to buy mine I haven't got back to him yet: computer problems.

My first * N80 arrived today - it's in very nice condition with only the slightest amount of stickiness to the rubber which I will treat with IPA after the test roll comes back. This is exactly what I was looking for in a lightweight film body, the F100 was overkill for this task. F5 / N80 feels like it will fill my needs.

* Yes, first - I low bid on a second one before I won the first and won at the opening bid amount. That one hasn't shipped yet, I suspect the seller isn't happy.

Congratulations, Ken!!:D

Thanks! This N80 even came with a 50/1.8D, so it's a self-contained system. I haven't mounted my 85/1.4G yet, it should be amusing.

Dammit, the frame count isn't incrementing. The film is advancing but the counter stays at 1. The only thing I can find with a Google search is behind the paywall at the Nikon fan site. Has anyone run across this with an N80.

Sounds like you need to hit the two button reset... May be the custom setting for multiple exposure is set for that.

Or, I might just be a moron.

I had it in multiple exposure mode. Looking for a brick wall to smack my head against.

Lol.

I will say this is a nice, lively camera with a prime mounted - I've played around with the 50/1.8D that came with it and my 50/1.4G so far. AF isn't as fast as on a more current body, but it's perfectly suited to the focus-and-recompose method I usually use anyways.

I remember liking these when they were new, but I had no use for one back then - I was 100% manual focus. Plus, the MB16 didn't have a release button which bothered me at the time. I'm over that now. ;-)
