My friend has a Nikon rangefinder with a Sonnar 1:2 f=5cm Carl Zeiss Jena lens that he can't figure out how to remove. Any suggestions?

Hi -- Nikon and Contax are the same in regard to removing and attaching lenses. Here are two pics from the CameraQuest website illustrating the lens release catch. It's that curved piece of spring on the lens-mount with a little dome formed at the end, adjacent to the infinity mark in the pics.

Focus the lens to infinity so that it's held in that position. Press the rounded end of the release catch inward toward the camera body. This unlatches the lens and it can then be turned clockwise about sixty degrees and then removed straight off the body.

The Contax and Nikon 50mm lenses don't have their own focusing mount, so bayonet into the inner bayonet in the focusing mechanism that's part of the body. Other lenses have their own focusing mount, and attach to the body using the outer bayonet mount that's also visible in these pics.

pacificrimcamera.com has a scanned Nikon S4 manual online. Go to their "photographica" pages, Nikon section, Instruction manuals and Brochures.
